(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Its no secret that the headset sound quality on the Xbox 360 is terrible with frequent crackling that can be painful to the ear. Well it looks like Microsoft has heard your cries of anguish as the company will be updating the codec to bring it up to speed.

According to Eurogamer, Microsoft is planning on releasing a fall update for the Xbox 360. Included in the update, the audio codec for the headset will be upgraded. The infrastructure will also be upgraded to handle more data being transferred.

Xbox Live Studios boss Jerry Johnson stated, “The codec we used when we first launched was a low bit rate codec and we stuck with that.”

He goes on to explain why the current codec has such an extremely low bit rate. He stated:

We launched and we said we required broadband. We required a 64k connection, which not many people think of as broadband any longer. But that was the minimum requirement to run the service at the time.

It’s time for us to move on. Especially if we want to think about broadening – a crackly headset on the top of your head – not what people think of when they talk about popular entertainment.

To put things into context, a 64k connection is pretty much near dial-up speed. The quality of the headset sound has been a source of complaint for many gamers that competitively play multiplayer titles. This is definitely one welcomed update.

Keep an eye out for more information on the fall Xbox 360 update.
