Yea, you have to go to account settings or something, then you should find the option, "Change Gamer Tag"

Go to profile and it should say something like change gamertag
I remember when they first gave my a gamertag for the trial version, I freaked out because I thought it was permanent

Go to My Xbox; go over to profile, and there is a tab that says change gamertag.

Just to let you know, that gamertag that he was given, he was able to change the whole time. You get 1 free change, and after the change it cost 800 MSP to change it again.
