there should be a spot on the dashboard to upgrade an account from silver to gold. or if he has had gold before and its expired than its the same concept (press xbox button, scroll all the way to the right and go to account management) or he can go to a gaming store (gamestop or walmart or wherever) and buy a gold card. if he gets the card, to redeem it just hit the xbox button and go all the way to the left and go to redeem code.

You can buy it from the dashboard
OR
Go into a game shop & ask to buy xBox live. ie 1 month, 6 month or 1 year

You can buy it with a creditcard using the xbox, or you can go to the store and buy an xbox live card.

he is in the navy, so doesnt play it much lol jus likes a game when he gets home

Dashboard, shops, eBay, online retailers all sell XBL.
