Found this out today when it happened to me, i took it to gamestation and they told me this so i gave microsoft a call and woop new xbox on the way.
Im from UK so not sure whether this is the same in other countries but i dont see why not

The 8 digit code depends on whats wrong with your xbox.
but i think there only replacing them if there not reading disks after the update so just say thats what happening
