The majority of us have seen the Game Informer survey that has been burning up the interwebs this last week. Through a survey of their readers Game Informer concluded that the Xbox 360 has a 54% failure rate between the 3 red lights and E74 error codes.
I have had two 360's fail on me and am currently working on my third one. When my third one dies and if the Game Informer survey is any indication, it will. I will run right out and buy my fourth 360 without hesistation.
A 54% failure rate brings many questions to mind. How did Microsoft avoid recall of the system, why are we not seeing more class action suits, and most importantly and personally, why do I keep buying consoles that our almost guaranteed to die on me.
I know that there are many people that have had a 360 die and refuse to buy another one because of it. The majority of us though, have and will buy another all the while hoping for better luck this time around. So the question becomes "What is Microsoft doing so right to garner this kind of loyalty?".
When I put this question to myself I created a list, so here it is.....
1. Games: Sure the 360 has a great Library and I personally own over 40 titles for the platform. With the decline of console exclusive titles though, there are fewer and fewer titles that I could not get on a PS3 or god forbid the Wii so I do not think that the 360's library is the reason.
2. Customer Service: While Microsoft tried to make the 360's failure issues right with a new warranty that cost them truck loads of money, their Customer Service is still woefully bad. My interaction with Xbox Customer Service for my first console consisted of navigating through automated menus for about 20 minutes before I got to a human who barely spoke english and insisted on walking me through all the troubleshooting tips that I had already tried before finally putting me in the que for my cardboard grave. I literally wanted to bang my head against a wall during the majority of the call. It took almost a month to get my 360 back. When my second 360 died I just tossed it in the trash and went to Gamestop the next day.
3. Xbox Live: There it is, the answer to why I and many others keep putting up with the total pain in the ass that is the 360. Yes, Xbox Live takes allot of crap for a large percentage of the community being total shit cocks, but I would like to see a survey on how many people that bought a new 360 due to failure were Xbox live gold members. It's not that I could not live without my 360, it's that I would truly miss powering up, joining a party, and having some quality game time with my friends.
Xbox Live is where the 360 truly shines. The PS3 and Wii have yet to bring a truly viable alternative to the service that is letting me connect to friends and make new ones almost on a daily bases. Until they do I think we will continue to replace our busted ass 360's with new ones, and Microsoft knows this. Microsoft has figured out that console owners will not only embrace features that PC gamers have enjoyed for years, we'll pay for it as well.
I will say this to Microsoft though, if your next console launches with failure issues, no online service, games, or anything else will keep me from shitting all over you every chance I get. One generation of this bullshit is enough and the gaming community has cut you enough slack already. Think about that while your designing the next Xbox, and don't push us.
