Such purchases are always the first to spark of rumours of a new product in the market and a specific name. This time it is the procurement of multiple ownerships, some of which include the domain name Xbox 8.
According to Fusible.com, Microsoft Corporation recently won two disputes over a batch of Xbox-related domains owned by a resident of China who apparently goes by the name "Cheng Juan". The disputed domain names include XboxPhone.com, XboxTablet.com, XboxLiveTV.com, XboxCompanion.com, and surprisingly, Xbox8.us and Xbox8.org.
The first four domain names obtained are understandable enough. But the last to come as a real surprise, especially since we were pondering that Microsoft would release the Xbox 720, according to online leaked documents." - Credit to Gadgets.ndtv.com

I would find it weird for Microsoft to go from the 360 number down to 8. I think that Xbox 720 name would make more sense and it is already known by name to most people.

I'm not all too sure that buying a domain has anything to do with the product name.

Well if you think about it this could be a logical step forward for Microsoft if they want to unite all of their products. Windows 8, Windows Phone 8 and now Xbox 8 may possibly the next firmware or major software update?

I doubt they will call it "Xbox 8", I believe that could mean Xbox Infinity. The 8 sideways is the infinity sign.
