(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); US, October 30, 2009 - Wake up this morning only to find your Xbox Live account has been banned? That's probably because you had a modded console and were playing illegal, pirated copies of games.

"We have taken action against a small percentage of consoles that have been modified to play pirated game discs," a Microsoft spokesperson told IGN. "In line with our commitment to combat piracy and support safer and more secure gameplay for the more than 20 million members of our Xbox LIVE community, we are suspending these modded consoles from Xbox LIVE."

Though Microsoft wouldn't confirm specifically when these bannings took place, a quick look over on its official forums suggest it's been going on over the course of this past week. Plenty of users have created threads on the technical feedback forum reporting of having their Xbox 360 console banned.

Microsoft also added this is a standing policy and isn't tied to any specific time-frame.

"All consumers should know that piracy is illegal and that modifying their Xbox 360 console to play pirated discs violates the Xbox LIVE terms of use, will void their warranty and result in a ban from Xbox LIVE," the spokesperson added. "The health of the video game business depends on customers paying for the genuine products and services they receive from manufacturers, retailers, and the third parties that support them."

Those who are getting banned deserve it.

Always Faithful
I didn't get banned, most of the people that got I banned were noobs who couldn't wait to play a game and play on XBL before release date and or thought by unplugging the ethernet cable and removing the hard drive there would be no evidence of them playing, everyone knows to wait until street date especially for hot titles and the system records disc activity. There will be plenty of more bans with this frankenstein rip of MW2 but I'm playing on my secondary 360 which doesn't go online which is what I purchased it for.

But really though everyone who flashes their 360 is welcoming the inevitable which is a ban but most are smart enough to follow guidelines and take precautions to ensure the best they can that they don't get banned but slips happen I suppose. My BENQ was flashed for over a year before it RROD, bought a liteon and flashed that with the 1.6 fw and use activation disc for wave 4 games except I never touched any of the new games until after they were released on my primary 360. When a proper rip of MW2 comes out I'll play online when it releases but for now it's story with franken.

Microsoft should make a way for us to backup our games I've had 2 games ruined from my 360 scratching them then I had to replace them becuase microsoft wont

And Cd's arent made to last forever so at the least we should be able to download the games from live to our console if we can prove we bought the games

but it would take too much money out of microsoft and the game dev's pockets so it will never happen

But legally if u buy anything on a cd u have the right to make a backup copy the problem is u have to mod your xbox to beable to play the backup and doing that will just get you banned so your screwed either way

Same here, both my cod 4 and 5 had a ring burnt into them and I had to pay for new ones. There should at least be some sort of refund.

If I had a modded 360 I would be playing MW2 right now, completeing the campaign mission's in time for multiplayer.

Does that make me a homo? I think you are jealous. I am !!

I agree that they should allow backing up of your games. I have had rings worn into my dvd's but I just sanded out the scratches with 1500 and 2000 grit wet dry sandpaper, then used regular auto polishing compound th buff them out with an old sock. My games now play like new.
