Activision chief marketing officer Tyler Bahl says a new Call of Duty sub-series is in development.
Modern Warfare 4 launches in just over a week, with early campaign access beginning tomorrow. It will be the fifth consecutive year the franchise has released a Black Ops or Modern Warfare game, but that pattern may soon end.

In an interview with The Game Business, Chief Marketing Officer Tyler Bahl discussed Activision’s decision to stop releasing consecutive games from the same sub-series. He said players wanted a fresh direction: “Even though there were different time settings, and ways to play the game with new features, that tonal shift is something that they were looking for.” Bahl added that Activision has already announced an upcoming title will launch a new sub-franchise, and that groundwork is underway.
Last month, Black Ops developer Treyarch hinted at a project unlike anything players have experienced before. Meanwhile, Sledgehammer Games is reportedly leading development on the 2027 Call of Duty, which could be the new sub-series. The franchise’s most recent release outside Black Ops and Modern Warfare was 2021’s Vanguard, also developed by Sledgehammer.
Activision is also now overseeing the Halo franchise. Xbox leadership says a new team will be formed to make the next Halo game, though a Call of Duty studio could still play a significant role.
The next COD installment, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 arrives October 23 on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch 2.
