No, as jailbreak isn't the actual term for modded PS3's but yes you'll need a modded PS3 and it will work online. How else do you think they're doing it to you.

You can't just jailbreak your console.. You will need an E3 flasher, and those cost alot of money if all you want to do is a payback on some modders.
If you really want to start modding I would recommend you to buy an already jailbroken ps3
