Post: Re-Emphasizing The Definition of Teamwork and Its Application to Call of Duty

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); This was intended to be somewhat of a rant, because I very often see the idea of teamwork being misused and misconstrued, but I felt that the message would be better conveyed in an open-minded and informative manner.

As reference, this is the literal definition of Teamwork, courtesy of You must login or register to view this content..

"work done by several associates with each doing a part but all subordinating personal prominence to the efficiency of the whole"

Simplified definition:
"the work or activity of a number of persons acting together as a team"

What does this mean and how does this apply to the Call of Duty?

To rephrase the definitions above, teamwork is the act of a group of persons working together to accomplish a unified interest or goal. All playlists in Call of Duty, with the exception of Free-For-All, involve competition between teams of 4-6 unique players. Unfortunately, if you are not playing with a party, you are bound to be placed with a group of players with different goals and interests. While the most obvious solution for this is to play Call of Duty with a party of friends, I still very often tend to recruit players on this site who are afraid to help capture Bravo, defuse a bomb, capture a site in HQ, and etc. I am assuming that the main reason behind this is because of the fact that Kill/Death ratio is more popular and significant than Win/Loss ratio in the eyes of the average Call of Duty player. Because of this, I feel that the most pertinent qualities of a team player need to be re-emphasized.

Demonstrates Reliability- This is the first and greatest point. A player who shows consistency and a strong motivation to fulfilling the unified goals of a team demonstrates reliability and becomes trustworthy.

Communicates Actively and Listens- Nothing irritates me more than a teammate's reluctance to do whatever it takes to win. I enjoy playing with individuals who not only express themselves clearly, but who are also able to listen, adapt, and execute effectively.

Respects and Supports Fellow Teammates- This goes hand-in-hand with both of the points expressed above. A good-teammate respects, understands, and assists fellow teammates. Team players look beyond their own interests and care about the team's goal as a whole.

Shows Commitment and Positive Attitude- Even through tough, competitive games, a good team player exhibits a passion to win and fights until the end. This point is very uncommon, I often see teammates abandoning the game's objective out of frustration and even fear. I cannot stress enough that there is always opportunity in loss, and that a negative attitude will only lead to compromising the team's goal.

In conclusion, these points can be applied to all team-based shooters. While I do not expect this to make a massive impact in the Call of Duty community, these traits are personally what I expect to see in every person I play with from now on. Call it try-harding, or whatever, but I am only interested in playing with those who share the similar goal as me- winning.

I concur. I played MW2 alone the majority of the time but on BO I usually have 6-9 man ground war parties. If you play with a party, the game is so much easier. Ghost users can't harm you because of Blackbirds. People can't camp as easily when you have people who know how to kill campers as opposed to getting owned, then crying on NGU. You can rush easier, capture and defend objectives easier. Playing solo leaves you with potential splitscreen noobs, idiots trying to Quickscope, bums who camp together in the same spot, etc.

Good post. Also COD should have a reward system similar to homefront. You get rewards for capturing flags, instead of kills. Also in the leaderboard or stat section they should remove the K/D counter (1.37) but keep the amount of kills and deaths you have. Maybe even remove the kills/deaths from the online leaderboards. Only you being able to see your K/D for yourself.

This should be stickied.

If they removed K/D how would you know who is good or bad? You get more points for capturing objectives that kills anyway. The key is winning, communication and getting kills. K/D isn't worth cryin over but it does matter. Winning is 1st, K/D is 2nd. It's like removing rank from sports games.

I had a full party yesterday against a clan. We were beating them 140-35 in Dom before they quit. Called us cheaters. Their avg Win% was .50 and average K/D of 0.65...I like to check combat records to see if the enemy is good or else Blackbird, Chopper, Dogs are coming lol.

I am usually swarmed with invites whenever I get online, while you may think that this is an upside, it honestly just pressures me to turn off my PS3.

Yes, K/D and W/L tracking should definitely stay.

black ops is the only game where you need a full party to be able to win games. Most times when I play alone i usually lose. Randoms piss me off and most times its these dumb split screens that get owned the most

Problem rule #16?
I say they should have the option to HIDE your K/D. In my opinion most people wouldnt care about dieing if their negitive K/D wasnt shown publicly. Of corse people who are proud of their K/D can display it. K/D kinda makes people scared of dieing but that hinders their preformance in game modes where you respawn.

Yep splitscreens are garbage most of the time. I normally refuse to play with them.

I disagree. I'd argue people care about K/D less. People quit on this game a lot less than on MW2. I've seen guys go 4-30 still playing. I think bad players with low K/D don't care about their K/D. Most of them just blame "overpowered" guns, campers and Ghost as to why their K/D is low.

K/D and W/L are good for competitors. Without guys would 0.50 K/D would talk trash like they are good. Combat Record lets you scout the competition. I've found most people play as good or bad as their Combat Record indicates.

El presador is one of my fave commentators but he always talks about K/D not mattering but it does. Will I camp or worse be a scary camper afraid of dying? NO but I will try to be as good at the game as possible. Usually people with lower K/D say it doesn't matter. I play to have fun and my idea of fun is winning and killing regardless of what gun or perk the enemy uses. IF I played a team full of Ghost, FAMAS, 2nd Chance users, it's on me to compete no matter how lame their loadout is.
