Post: Re-Emphasizing The Definition of Teamwork and Its Application to Call of Duty

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); This was intended to be somewhat of a rant, because I very often see the idea of teamwork being misused and misconstrued, but I felt that the message would be better conveyed in an open-minded and informative manner.

As reference, this is the literal definition of Teamwork, courtesy of You must login or register to view this content..

"work done by several associates with each doing a part but all subordinating personal prominence to the efficiency of the whole"

Simplified definition:
"the work or activity of a number of persons acting together as a team"

What does this mean and how does this apply to the Call of Duty?

To rephrase the definitions above, teamwork is the act of a group of persons working together to accomplish a unified interest or goal. All playlists in Call of Duty, with the exception of Free-For-All, involve competition between teams of 4-6 unique players. Unfortunately, if you are not playing with a party, you are bound to be placed with a group of players with different goals and interests. While the most obvious solution for this is to play Call of Duty with a party of friends, I still very often tend to recruit players on this site who are afraid to help capture Bravo, defuse a bomb, capture a site in HQ, and etc. I am assuming that the main reason behind this is because of the fact that Kill/Death ratio is more popular and significant than Win/Loss ratio in the eyes of the average Call of Duty player. Because of this, I feel that the most pertinent qualities of a team player need to be re-emphasized.

Demonstrates Reliability- This is the first and greatest point. A player who shows consistency and a strong motivation to fulfilling the unified goals of a team demonstrates reliability and becomes trustworthy.

Communicates Actively and Listens- Nothing irritates me more than a teammate's reluctance to do whatever it takes to win. I enjoy playing with individuals who not only express themselves clearly, but who are also able to listen, adapt, and execute effectively.

Respects and Supports Fellow Teammates- This goes hand-in-hand with both of the points expressed above. A good-teammate respects, understands, and assists fellow teammates. Team players look beyond their own interests and care about the team's goal as a whole.

Shows Commitment and Positive Attitude- Even through tough, competitive games, a good team player exhibits a passion to win and fights until the end. This point is very uncommon, I often see teammates abandoning the game's objective out of frustration and even fear. I cannot stress enough that there is always opportunity in loss, and that a negative attitude will only lead to compromising the team's goal.

In conclusion, these points can be applied to all team-based shooters. While I do not expect this to make a massive impact in the Call of Duty community, these traits are personally what I expect to see in every person I play with from now on. Call it try-harding, or whatever, but I am only interested in playing with those who share the similar goal as me- winning.

While this is true, having an option to hide K/D will only make it difficult to scout and judge the competition and a teammate's skill.

Exactly. People shouldn't be forced into not caring about K/D. People have a right to run around with Ballistic Knives or be tryhards. I will say that guys with high K/D ragequit the most
