I'm not going to lie, I can't even edit V9.. No matter which way I do it I just get black screen.

Means you're not compiling it correctly. Easiest way is to get an xbox version of the patch you want to edit. Edit in ff viewer. And then use BuC's xbox to ps3 converter. I recommend editing DEREKTROTTER's Mossy v8.19 menu as it is already a brilliant patch and has a ready to edit xbox version with it.
