Lets think a little bit about what a melee intent was for.
It was a tool in your arsenal that if you came down to no ammo and no time to reload you could take the initiative before the other person and melee(knife) before you were killed. (this should have no debate that is its intent a goto weapon.
Well IW in their infinite wisdom has by allowing certain perks and them being in different sets have created a whole new intent that of the professional knifer.

Yes it does detract from the game (go ahead debate this but I guarantee a poll would agree with me..

Now for the solution.

When you knife someone with STD you get the STD or the patch for STD and that is it.

What if while you were patched with the STD title it did something more to someone who knifed you.

It acts in the way a stun or flash grenade does it will "stun" you for a short time, maybe slow you down or disorient you.

This would bring back the knife to a part of the persons arsenal and not turn it into a class.
It is the adage of action/reaction measure/countermeasure.
Right now there is no countermeasure to a quantum knifer but add this there is. This would allow the perks to still survive intact and not be watered down for someone that has integrated them into their own custom class and allow them to be used as intend.

real heart sensors are being developed, but are decades away from being anything like they are in mw2, and as such are the most unrealistic thing in mw2 imo

not to mention they ripped it from aliens

You said it right there, you only mentioned Commando sure they intended its use but did they fore see its consequences when someone set it up the other 2 perks Lightweight and Marathon.
I admit I have acommando perk on one of my classes but I use it like it was meant, I emptied my mag another dud comes into view i take him out with knife.

I didn't turn myself into a runner any Kenyan marathoner would hope to be half as good as and just go around cutting up people.

i live in Australia too, and i manage to find plenty of games with good connection.

on topic, knifing is heaps of fun and is a different way to play after you get bored of the run and gunning, knifing is more entertaining

I would subscribe to the theory that yes Infinity Ward knows what they are doing with all the different class load outs.

The reason they are doing it is to balance the game. They know the people with skill won't use these combos it just isn't fun doing it that way.
But...
The less skilled we will called them eye to hand mentally challenged , This is the only way for them to play and therefore to buty their games and add on packs.
So Yes these things like knifing and such are there to keep the retards happy and buying.
Because remember folks this is a first person SHOOTER, combat game. No one has yet to advertise this game as a First person KNIFER.

From now on I will just look at it this way when I am knifed by someone using the perks I will smile, pretend I am patting them on the head and saying to them " yes you can do it you are so special, yes you are, who knifed that mean ol player hmm who did who did, yes you did you did and yes you CAN do it" (remember retard strength guys, only praise em, don't get em upset"

Yeah, assault rifles are overpowered lol
You guys just need to learn to ADS faster.... and more accurately :p

The assault rifles are greatly overpowered. With stopping power, the Tar-21 becomes a 3 shot kill and the FAMAS and M16 can kill an enemy with a single 3-burst fire.

And we need to ADS faster and more accurately? When they see me running towards them from 20 metres away they try hip-spray me.

Also, crunch, that post about the balancing thing is complete bullshit. Also, it takes skill to knife. You try running around in Afghan, Derail or Wasteland, out in the open, only stabbing people whilst trying to dodge hundreds of bullets coming from directly infront of you while you're trying to get within stabbing range.

By the way, today I got a 31-6 with only my knife. You guys complain when we stay still, you complain when we keep running, what the **** do you want?

I don't have a problem with ppl. knifing, i try to keep my back away from any doors or somewhere someone can get behind me. If you knife me you deserve it cause i either screwed up and didn't watch my back or you dodged some barrett rounds lol.

although i will say i've knifed some ppl. and i even said how the hell did i do that lol. It's pretty easy to knife someone on this game.
