Post: I have a problem with booting my computer!

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); I have been having a problem with my computer for a while, and not even PC World tech team could do anything! They just replaced the PSU and told me it was stable! (clearly not!!!)

I won't go into too much detail about my spec unless it is totally necessary but here are the basics:
The original computer is a Acer Veriton M464

I have replaced the RAM for 4GB instead of the original 2 (i can find the exact part if necessary)

The on-board graphics are pretty awful so i bought an AMD Radeon HD5770

My new PSU is 650W so should be more than enough power

The problem i am having is the computer is only booting literally once every 4 or so days. When i press the power button the computer acts as if it booting for the first 1-3 seconds and the instantly powers down, it does not even make it to the BIOS screen so i cannot do checks such as temperature and power although the temperature seems to be around 24/25 Celcius.

I have tried a lot of things to resolve the problem such as:

The power supply is brand new and i know it is not faulty. (i have tried a few power supplies in the computer and get the same result)

Everything is plugged in where is should be

When no RAM is installed the MOBO beeps which suggests that there is no major fault with the motherboard (although i may be wrong)

The RAM is new and works in other machines (also occasionally when my machine boots) and so does not seem to be a problem

I have taken out my graphics card for now and so that should not be causing the problems

Very occasionally the computer does boot and will run for a good few days, but the second i shut it down (or it loses power) i cannot turn it on again. If necessary i might be able to get to the BIOS screen to run checks but it will take a while and is not practical.

If anybody has anything that could help me i would be VERY grateful and a big Thanks/+rep, and maybe some vBux will be in order Happy

Thanks Smile

have you installed any new programs etc? and have you tried system recovery?

Obviously i cannot be 100% but i do not think it had anything to do with what is on the computer, 2 reasons:
Sometimes it boots fine, so if it was a virus or something to do with what is on the HDD then it would not boot at all i assume?
Also, i have tried different HDD in it, and without one in it and the results are still the same :(

Well i have connected and reconnected everything, plus the tech team at PC world were the ones who fitted it in the first place so i assume all PSU connections are fitted properly. I suppose something else could have come loose but im not sure what else there is other than power supply? because most other things are part of the motherboard?

If it is powering up and shutting down in a few seconds, that is not the power supply. That is the 'mother board'. You need a new one, there is a short in the one you have.

I was wondering if that was the problem, but i have a couple of issues with that.
1. why would it suddenly go and start shorting?
2. when no ram is installed the constant beep is working and is there which usually means there is nothing wrong with the motherboard
3. At the moment it seems the most plausable but why when i have searched hundreds of websites have i not found a single person who has even suggested this as a solution?

Not saying you are wrong obviously it is just a big part that would need replacing and want to make 100% sure that i am not wasting any money Smile

You will 'never' be 100% sure on anything electrical when it goes bad, but to answer :y:

1. It is electrical. So yes, it would just suddenly stop. It will also get worst. It will stop powering up at all. That every so often you have now will stop.
2. A constant beep don't mean the motherboard is fine. It just means that there isn't any RAM. Checking RAM is the first thing the motherboard does. Your problem is most likely after that.
3. I did a search and first site listed was talking about....

Damn :L Doesnt sound too good then. Maybe we were searching different things as well :S Not sure but every single website said it was the power supply. Thanks for your help anyway Smile Is the only was the fix this to get a new motherboard? Or is there a way to find out where/what is shorting? Smile

I had a computer do that about 3 months ago, this is how I know that. Also, I did the same thing changed the power supply first. It didn't fix it. Your power supply should be fine as yo said you have changed it. I'm not sure of how to check it. With the price of computer equipment now days. (They are cheap now days). I would just narrow it down, to where it has to be the motherboard (Which sounds like you did). Then just buy a new one.
