With only two months passing since Microsoft’s official release of Windows 8, the statistical reports of its use are somewhat disappointing. Despite the massive push that Microsoft has been doing on the market in PC sales, they have yet to make a dent in the growth of sales with Windows 8. According to the statistics, Windows 8 is following the same sales and use slope as one of its predecessors, Windows Vista.
Currently, Windows 7 is leading the operating system on the market. With nearly half of the entire market using Windows 7, 44.71% as of December 29[SUP]th[/SUP] 2012, the user base is still standing strong. Even more surprisingly, more than one-third of the OS user base still uses Windows XP, 39.82% as of December 29[SUP]th[/SUP] 2012. Following the leaderboards, Vista follows at 5.7%, Mac OS X 10.6 at 2.19% and Linux at 1.25%. Windows 8 trails behind Linux at 1.09% of the entire market.

What does this mean for Windows 8? Will Windows 8 be a flop like Vista? There is talk about a new release that is supposed to occur in mid-2013, Project Blue. Project blue is much like the Vista to Windows 7 release; it’s a revised version of Windows 8, possibly to be called Windows 9. It is said that they are planning on offering it as an upgrade from Windows 8 or a new OS to purchase.
Overall, it seems as if Microsoft is trying to get back into the game and expand in order to have a universal operating system that people will enjoy and be familiar with when they switch between Desktop to Tablet. Now the question only remains, what does Microsoft have in store for us in the near future that might cause us to change our minds about moving away from Windows XP or Windows 7.
