You need to take drivers ed to get a permit.

When you go for your license, you have to take hands on driving 4 times.

yeah my step daughter just went through this. You take the drivers ed class... you can find one online. Then you can get your permit by taking the permit test at the DMV. SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT AT THE DMV!!!! Do that early for both the permit test & behind the wheel test. YOu need to complete 4 hrs of behind the wheel training with an instructor prior to taking the behind the wheel test. You need like 100 hrs or something driving with your parent(s). Good luck.

You only need drivers ed if you are under 18. If you are over 18 you dont even need a permit to take your dl test Winky Winky
