Activision has this week given a hint to the future direction of its Call of Duty franchise with a number of Web domain registrations.
The publisher registered callofdutyfuturewarfare.com, along with callofdutyfuturewarfare2.com and callofdutyfuturewarfare3.com on Tuesday, along with a number of variations on that theme.

The publisher also registered several other "warfare" domains without any Call of Duty branding: spacewarfare2.com, spacewarfare3.com, secretwarfare2.com and secretwarfare3.com. Advancedwarfare2.com, and advancedwarfare3.com were also registered at the same time.

Secretwarfare.com is a preexisting domain, currently registered to an address in Norway unconnected with Activision, while spacewarfare.com and futurewarfare.com remain up for grabs. The domain registrations were first spotted by self-proclaimed "information-sleuthing site" Superannuation.

Domain registrations do not always indicate product names, though often they do serve as an indication of future plans. It is known, however, that there are currently at least four more Call of Duty games in development. There is the recently unveiled Call of Duty: Black Ops, being developed World at War studio Treyarch, as well as three as-yet-untitled projects. One is an action adventure title from Sledgehammer Games, another is a project presumed to be Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 at troubled dev house Infinity Ward, and a third is reportedly in development at Raven Software. There is also a massively multiplayer title in the works in Asia, though a developer has yet to be attached to that project.

Activision outlined its expansion plans for the Call of Duty franchise in March, when a new COD business unit was unveiled shortly after the ousting of Infinity Ward's cofounders. The firing of Jason West and Vince Zampella led to at least 35 other resignations from Infinity Ward, with many key staff jumping ship to the two executives' new studio, Respawn Entertainment.

Activision have recently got a hold of some new domain names that could possibly indicate what the next Call of Duty games could be about. As we know, Activision had a plan of going through the time stages from WW2, Vietnam, Modern and now possible Future and even space. Do you think this is being taken a bit too far? Advanced Warfare seems a bit too close to the name of Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter, so maybe there could be some dispute from Ubisoft over that name maybe? I can't see how Space Warfare would be interesting without it going away from the setting of Call of Duty now. Who would you be fighting against, aliens? Shooting laser beams across a vacuum? So what are your thoughts? Taking it a bit too far forward maybe? Getting a bit money hungry? Or maybe they might not actually be Call of Duty games.

The reason for the "spacesuits" is because the planes they flew so high, it may as well have been the moon. no news yet as to whether or not well get to fly (in) one.

Well this could mean nothing. As everyone knows there is still that big lawsuit going on and if Jason West and Vince Zampella win than they have the rights to the mw franchise. This could be Activision taking all the names so that Respawn has to pay a lot of money for the websites.

This wouldn't be a MW though, it would be like SW, or AW. But I can see why though, ATVI like the dollar.

To and fro the island.
This is quite interesting. Like some have said, it could be an indication of Activision's plans for the future, or it could have something to do with the law suit that is currently underway.

Honestly, though, at this time, Activision may just be registering these domains as "reassurance". They may have a few ideas for each of those, and are considering taking one of those paths in the future. To keep their options open, they could have registered the domains to ensure they could go forward with any of them.

Thanks for the post, quite an interesting find. Perhaps this will turn out to be a significant piece of news, after all.

Out of all of those titles, Advanced Warfare sounds most promising to me.

I can see why but it sounds very similar to Advanced Warfighter of Ghost Recon games.
