(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Many atheists, besides denying the existence of a God, have an issue with organized religion.

Although most argue against all belief systems, Christ, in particular, and the religions that support belief in him, have been debated as being harmful to society.
Followers of Christianity have been accused of being ignorant of scientific fact and deluded by religious tenants as well as the cause of many wars, deaths, and conflicts.

I will not bring in other religion's holy days because most on this site are unaware of them, but Christmas is probably the most recognized religious day of the year and has transcended its original meaning to become the holiday season in the west.

Although many non practicing religious people celebrate this season, is it appropriate for Atheists, with contempt for religion, to celebrate a religious holiday?

I'm sure many will argue that it is more than that now, but if one is going to argue against religion the rest of the year, why should they overlook it at this time of year?

If one has made a intelligent informed opinion on God and religion, then shouldn't they take a principled stance against celebrating the Christian holiday season?

To be the first to undermine my own position:

Happy Holidays too all!!!

I am wearing my Santa suit, hopefully it is flame proof.

Atheists aren't celebrating the birth of Christ they're simply enjoying a holiday season

Would our resident atheists be as forgiving of believers if they wanted to partake in something that went against their core beliefs?
Any sign of double standard or hypocrisy is heavily criticized by the other side when you believe in a higher power.

Celebrating Christmas isn't going against Atheist views. Celebrating Christmas is a family tradition for me. I don't celebrate it for religious reasons, so regardless of what the holiday actually represents, I'm celebrating my friends and family. (and presents)

If I were to celebrate Christmas in the name of Jesus or God, then yes it would be going against my beliefs. Seeing as how all it is to me, is a day off and family time, it goes right along with my beliefs.

I doubt many atheists celebrate Christmas for any religious reason, if they did they wouldn't really be atheist, would they?

Also, just for some clarification, I am not atheist, I am agnostic. Regardless, I still don't believe in God.

What it means to be agnostic for those who do not know
Atheists do not "believe" in any god(s), deity's of any kind.

Agnostics do not "know" if there are any god(s), deity's of any kind.

Meaning, until there is rock solid proof in front of me, I don't believe in any deity.

You obviously have the mental capacity of a 4 year old. Do you honestly think that Christmas is still celebrated for Jesus? All it is, is a day off, a day to give and get presents and a day to spend with your family. No one cares about Jesus. I'm agnostic and I celebrate Christmas in the name of family and friends, not in the name of Jesus. Who are you to tell me what I can and can't celebrate?
