(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Many atheists, besides denying the existence of a God, have an issue with organized religion.

Although most argue against all belief systems, Christ, in particular, and the religions that support belief in him, have been debated as being harmful to society.
Followers of Christianity have been accused of being ignorant of scientific fact and deluded by religious tenants as well as the cause of many wars, deaths, and conflicts.

I will not bring in other religion's holy days because most on this site are unaware of them, but Christmas is probably the most recognized religious day of the year and has transcended its original meaning to become the holiday season in the west.

Although many non practicing religious people celebrate this season, is it appropriate for Atheists, with contempt for religion, to celebrate a religious holiday?

I'm sure many will argue that it is more than that now, but if one is going to argue against religion the rest of the year, why should they overlook it at this time of year?

If one has made a intelligent informed opinion on God and religion, then shouldn't they take a principled stance against celebrating the Christian holiday season?

To be the first to undermine my own position:

Happy Holidays too all!!!

I am wearing my Santa suit, hopefully it is flame proof.

I'm agnostic and I celebrate Christmas in the name of family and friends, not in the name of Jesus. Who are you to tell me what I can and can't celebrate?
Theres an enormous number of people who still believe in god. So saying "No cares about Jesus" makes you just as foolish. You're blinded by the materialistic society we live in, you truly have not witnessed how other countries celebrate Christmas and for you to say it's "just a day off, a day to give and get presents and a day to spend with your family" definitely shows how ignorant you are.

I say yes-simply to help the economy. They need not buy a Christmas tree, or hang up lights, or for that matter go to church, but go out and take advantage of the deals (both before and after Christmas)

For you interpret "no one cares about Jesus" as me saying that NOT ONE person in the world cares about Jesus, you are literalistic and fail to make sense of sentences. The description I gave of Christmas day is what it is to me, if you celebrate in the name of some fake being, that is perfectly fine.

If that's the case, then saying that it's just a day to celebrate Jesus' birth is just as ignorant. He was simply stating what Christmas meant to him.

You know, I'm beginning to think that it would be irresponsible to ever think anything you say is meant to be literal. Any time one of your all-encompassing statements is challenged you immediately respond with "It's not meant to be taken literally" along with some combination of insults and condescensions.

I could understand the putting down of others' religions in the God vs Fact thread, however, just because we are on the subject of Atheism doesn't give you the right to trash someone else's beliefs. And just because I know you enjoy arguing with people and insulting them, and feeling all around better than someone because of something that doesn't really even matter in the long run, I will not respond to any of your responses to this post. I know you thrive off of conflict, if you didn't, you wouldn't be making so many baseless and ignorant claims. You're nothing more than a troll.

Sure, I don't see why not. Christianity and Catholicism are the 2 dominant religions in the U.S. So is it so wrong to assume that the majority of people you'll encounter will be celebrating Christmas? The way I see it, wishing someone Merry Christmas is the exact same thing as saying Happy Holidays. Christmas is not only a holiday, it is also a time frame. Wishing someone Merry Christmas is just a way to say you want them to experience joy in that time frame. I don't see why people get offended by "Merry Christmas" - the thought behind the words is all that matters.

Kudos to you for being one of the most rational, reasoned, and respectful debators on this forum.

I don't know your age but your maturity is refreshing.

Have a very Merry Holiday Season!!!
