Worth the Weight
1)Shut down your PC.

2)Power-cycle your Modem and Router. (Turn them off for 1 minute)

3)Wait about 5 minutes for the connections to refresh.

4)Turn on your computer, and wait for everything to load.

5)Try again.

When you "checked" your firewall, did you try disabling it? Or, try allowing the program through the firewall.

1. Verify that the MSN network works
Visit the MSN page showing the status of MSN Messenger . If a problem is reported, just take your troubles patiently, and try connecting again later. If everything is OK, however you must roll up your sleeves .

2. Set the time and date of the computer
It might sound silly, but a bad time setting of the computer may cause a malfunction in MSN Messenger. So adjust the time and date (check the year as well). On Windows, simply double-click the time displayed on the lower right corner.

3. Adjust your firewall
If you use software such as Norton Internet Security, Zone Alarm or McAfee, make sure they are set to allow MSN Messenger to operate.

4. Make sure the DLLs are declared
To run, MSN Messenger needs to use DLLs. These are perhaps not properly declared at the registry.

To correct this, click the Windows Start menu and select Run. In the Open field, type regsvr32 softpub.dll then click OK.

A message DllRegisterServer succeeded in softpub.dll appears.

Repeat the process with regsvr32 wintrust.dll regsvr32 and initpki.dll.

Restart MSN Messenger.

I take no responsibility, and IMO, this should only be used as a last resort.

5. Clear the proxy settings in MSN Messenger
Start MSN Messenger On the Tools menu, click Options. Display the Connection section, click the Advanced button. Delete entries in the field SOCKS, then click OK twice to save the settings. This solution seems to work when MSN tells you that the gateway is offline

6. Change the proxy settings and Internet Explorer security
In Internet Explorer, click the Tools menu and select Internet Options .... Display the Connections tab and click the Settings button. Uncheck all boxes. Confirm by clicking OK.

Then view the Advanced tab. In the Security section, uncheck the Check for server certificate revocation Editor, and select the Use SSL 2.0 and SSL 3.0. Click OK.

Click OK to close the window.

7. Fix MSN Messenger
Go into the Control Panel in Windows, accessible via the Start menu, then click the Add / Remove Programs. Select the program MSN Messenger and click the Change button. Then choose Repair.

8. Set the default connection
If multiple connections are set on your computer, set your current connection as default connection. Pull down for this purpose the Start menu, select Connect To and Show all connections. Right-click the connection that you use, then select the Set as default connection.

TROUBLESHOOTING STEPS (Source at Bottom Smile )

Note: Verify that you can connect to the Internet before you follow these steps.

1. Visit the Windows Update Web site, and then verify that you have the latest updates installed:
1.a. Verify that the computer requires updates, and then install the updates if necessary.
1.b. Restart the computer after you apply the updates.
2. Verify that Windows Live Messenger Messenger is enabled through the firewall:
2.a. If you are using MSN Messenger, visit the following Web site, locate the FAQ section, and then click the How to enable MSN Messenger through a Firewall topic. This topic describes how to enable MSN Messenger through the most common firewalls.
2.b. If you are using Windows Live Messenger, visit the following Web site, locate the FAQ section, and then click the How to enable Windows Live Messenger through a Firewall . This topic describes how to enable Windows Live Messenger through the most common firewalls.
2.c. If you disabled the firewall in the past, it still may be blocking Messenger, try to restart the firewall. After the firewall software is running, follow the steps in 1.a to make sure that Messenger is enabled through the firewall. Also try removing the firewall program that is installed to verify that it is not causing a problem even if it is disabled.
Note: This is only a temporary workaround and you may have to reinstall the firewall software again.
2.d. If you are not sure which firewalls you have installed on the computer, click Add Or Remove Programs in Control Panel, and then scroll through the list of installed programs. Some popular firewall vendors include Norton, McAfee, and Zone Alarm.

3. Clear the Domain Name System (DNS) Cache:
3.a. Click Start, click Run, type cmd , and then click OK. For Windows Vista, click Start, and then type cmd in the Search box. This command will open the command window.
3.b. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then click OK:
ipconfig /flushdns
Note This command flushes all the DNS entries that have been cached.
3.c. Type exit , and then press ENTER to close the command window.

4. Clear the proxy settings in Windows Live Messenger Messenger to establish a direct connection to the Messenger service.

Note: If you are connecting from a private network either from a school or a company, ask the network administrator about the settings that are appropriate for the proxy settings in Windows Live Messenger.

• MSN Messenger version 7.0:
a. Delete the entries under SOCKS Version 4.
b. Delete the entries under SOCKS Version 5.
c. Delete the entries under HTTP Proxy Server.
d. Click OK two times to save the settings.
e. Try to sign in to Messenger again.

• Windows Live Messenger:
a. On the Tools menu, click Options.
b. In the left Navigation Pane, click Connection.
c. In the Connection Settings section, click Advanced Settings.
d. Delete the content in the SOCKS field.
e. Click OK two times to save the settings.

5. Reset the proxy server settings for Microsoft Internet Explorer:
a. Start Internet Explorer.
b. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
c. Click the Connections tab, and then click LAN Settings.
d. Clear the Automatically detect settings check box.
e. Click OK, and then click OK again.

6. Reregister the security .dll files that may be conflicting with Messenger. To do this, click Start, click Run, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
REGSVR32 softpub.dll initpki.dll wintrust.dll
Wait until you see three pop-up windows that state that the files were successfully registered.

7. We are aware that some spyware such as IMPlus may affect your connectivity to the Messenger service. To determine whether you have IMPlus installed on the computer, open Control Panel, and then select Add or Remove Programs. Scroll through the list of installed programs to find whether IMPlus is installed. If you find it, click Remove to remove the program.

8. If you cannot find an entry in Add Or Remove Programs, determine whether the IMPlus program is running on the computer:
8.a. Click Start, click Run, type taskmgr , and then press ENTER. For Windows Vista, click Start, and then type taskmgr in the Search box.
8.b. In the Task Manager window , click the Processes tab.
8.c. Click the Image Name column header to order the list of program names.
8.d. Scroll through the list to determine whether IMPlus.exe is running on the computer. If you find the process, select the entry, and then click End Process.
8.e. Confirm that you want to stop the program.
9. If you are connected through a router connection, please try to bypass it and directly connect your computer to your Internet modem. If you are able to connect to Windows Live Messenger without the router connection, you may need to update your router firmware or configure its settings such that Messenger connections are allowed. For further assistance on this, please contact the router manufacturer.

10. Sign in to Windows Live Messenger again.
Best of Luck

Do this to your IE, even if you use Firefox or Chrome

IE8
Download it from filehippo.com will ensure you have the latest update. Type internet explorer in filehippo search. Select the correct one to suit XP or Vista/win7. Its as fast and as presentable as Firefox.. When you install IE8 it will automatically uninstall the existing IE, so if you having problems you can try re-installing it, then:.

Set up IE/8 so it runs efficiently. (2 minutes)

1. In IE, Click Tools >Internet Options >Advance Tab. Click Restore advance settings defaults button. Then scroll the listings down to near the bottom and select >Tick empty temp files when browser closes (this empties the cache, which if not empty, will stop you from going online and hassles msn)
2. Ensure only one phishing filter program, and only one firewall program is used on the computer. Disable others that may be in other software, or disable the browser phishing filter.
Ie8 - to disable the phishing filter click Tools > scroll down to SmartScreen filter and disable it. (leave it on is preferred) SmartScreen filter will stop malicious code from being installed to your computer, specially through activex, however it may be doubling up with your internet security program so causing your browser to be a little slower. So either disable it in the browser or disable it in your internet security program.
3. Then in IE8 click the blue drop arrow near the search icon (top RHS corner) >manage search providers >make the one you want default >then remove all the others listed. These really slow IE8 so remove them.
4 Click Tools >manage add ons > accelerators and disable all of them.
5 Get rid of any toolbars on the menu line. Place the curser near the top under the address bar and right click. Tick Menu bar, Status Bar, and Command bar. Untick any other listed.
6 Then Click Tools >Awesome faceelete Browser History, cookies, add ons, the whole lot. Do this regularly. Close the browser to set the settings.

Reboot and then do a windows express updates until no more updates. This seems to help IE8.

After you have used IE8 and happy with it, then you can experiment with the accelerators in manage add ons, and also experiment with the selections on the menu bar (5 above)

IE8 has nice coloured tabs and if you see some text you like swipe it and a blue arrow shows, click it and you can select a function. These functions will change as you add accelerators. eg you may add Wiki, Google or a medical site etc.

This should help you
