If you use internet explorer, try this to reset your proxy server settings:
* Open Internet Explorer
* Click on the Tools menu
* Go to Internet Options
* Click the Connections tab
* Then click LAN Settings
* Uncheck the Automatically detect settings check box
* Click OK
If this doesn't work, here is a 'guide' on how to fix it. IT IS NOT WRITTEN BY ME AND I HAVE NOT TESTED IT.

Delete the registry keys for Windows Live Messenger:

REG DELETE “HKCU\Software\Microsoft\MSNMessenger’ /f
