I made a little diagram for you.

Basically the dumb apes died out, while others struggled to survive. Slowly they adjusted to their enviroment, and some apes moved from place to place. In order to adjust to a new enviroment they had to "evolve"(I'm assuming you understand the theory of evolution). The apes that didnt NEED to adapt to survive stayed the same, and those who needed to change changed into humans.

Evolution takes a long time for some and others, because of quick changes a single species could split into two more over a few generations.
If I payed more attention in science Id remember the name for it but the apes and monkeys went in seperate enviroments and adapted to their needs as did our ancestors.
After long enough you get a gap between species just like how there are separate races.
