They'll probably end up in museums or something, and you can turn them in at banks or something in exchange for online cash. Although I do believe it'll be hundreds of years until we go completely digital, to the extent you mentioned.

National Security, but also to give other countries a sense of fear of their knowledge & power I believe. Although yeah this is also annoying, I do think certain aspects of it are necessary.
