The US government has a strict limit on how much money it can be in debt. This is called the debt ceiling. Once the debt ceiling is reached, the government/President can no longer borrow money from other entities (other countries and governments). President Obama has spent so much money already, the US is about to reach its debt ceiling.

Obama wants Congress to raise the debt ceiling so his government can borrow more money. Obama states that if the debt ceiling is not raised, the US government may not be able to pay Social Security, the military, and other government employees due to lack of funds.

However, I believe what Obama is saying is misleading. The US government receives plenty of money from tax revenue every month. This money is more than enough to cover Social Security, military, and other such expenses. The US government is obligated by law to pay these debts 1st and foremost before other government programs receive money.

Many people in the country, especially conservatives, do not want Congress to raise the debt ceiling. These people are tired of the government spending and want Obama and future Presidents to cut back on spending. Next week on Tuesday, Congress will vote on whether or not to raise the debt ceiling.

Some economists feel that if the debt ceiling is not raised, the US government will default on some of its foreign debts, which would cause the US credit rating to fall...thereby reducing the value of the dollar. I do not believe this scenario will occur. The US is the only country in the world that can print as much money as it wants to and pay off its debts. This is because the US dollar is the top currency used across the world.

However, the US needs to be careful not to print too much money or it'll become worthless like the Mexican Peso. The real danger is government spending. Government spending needs to come down or we might one day be in serious economic trouble. But the debt ceiling vote next week won't cause disastrous economic consequences regardless of the vote in my opinion. The US government has plenty of money for years to come.

legalize marijuana? That's one solution, but I'd rather have it stay decriminalized rather than full out legalized. If it does get legalized, govt.s gonna tax the shit out of it. I don't wanna be paying fukn $24.50 for a gram haha.

Yeah 420, but if It does become legal you will probably be able to buy a pack of joints at the gas station or something man, sooo many more people would buy and the prices would come way down. But they would tax the SHIT out of it too.

Wow, If you guys knew how big the black budget that the U.S. had, you'd be dumbstruck. Did you guys know that the U.S. is the biggest distributor of illegal narcotics in the world? If we really wanted to we wouldn't let the columbian and mexican drug cartels peddle drugs to our own people. The system is so crooked it would make your head spin. But I digress... I say let us default so that we can finally focus on dealing with our corrupt government. We should quit giving money to the people who kill our society & start wars for fun. If we got rid of the USD & the gov't, we wouldn't have to worry about war or oil we would quit being stupid and realize that the government is the source of most of our monetary problems. If we would just go back to using a trade system based on gold and silver we wouldn't have the cluster**** we have now.
I'm only 15 and I realize that we are WAY over our heads but too many people don't have the balls to take them head on.

The reason marijuana wasn't legalized in the first place was that hemp was set to replace various fibers and paper products. The logging industry didn't take too kindly to that so they bribed various officials to make it illegal. If marijuana was legalized, some good would probably come out of it (ex cheaper prices on certain items) but they probably would tax it heavily. Also, marijuana is an amazing plant for its medicinal properties. I'm willing to bet that another factor of pot's illegalization has to do with the pharmaceutical industry and the losses it would sustain. I mean would you rather pay $500 dollars for anti-depressants or $50 for some good times?

Not being racist, but think about when he was first elected. There was that scandal about him being from another country, and him being muslim, and having ties to Al-Queda. If you were in Al Queda and had the U.S president on your side, wouldn't you do something long term to screw the US and have people not suspicious about him being in the terrorist group. I know it's just a conspiracy but.. there plan could have been to destroy the U.S dollar, make U.S debt incredibly high, then plan something for when he is just about done being in office? Seems crazy but hey- anythings possible.

Decent little explanation. Basically our spending > earnings as a government. The government needs to cut welfare or some other handouts, too many people abuse handouts.

I understand a lot now, something that would also help is not paying the healthcare of illegal aliens. I like mexicans, but illegals that don't pay taxes in the U.S. shouldn't receive practically free healthcare. They should be U.S. citizens, but too bad the terrible mexican government won't give them the papers to apply for a U.S. citizenship, therefore they hop outta their hellhole in mexico, and come here then they get hurt, and require healthcare. A small part of the debt is the mexican government in my opinion. Because they cannot manage their country with the drug wars, and so we get illegals from their country coming over here without papers.

Idk why it's not legalized, there's this stuff called happy shaman herbs, and it's legal, and gets you higher than pot. So it's pretty much the same as marijuana, but worse? Why's cannabis illegal then................
