Authorities in Tampa, Florida, have arrested a 17-year-old after discovering via a tip that he allegedly planned to set off explosives and kill dozens of students at his former high school, officials said Wednesday.

Police found explosive materials in Jared Cano's home, as well as a manifesto outlining a minute-by-minute plan detailing specific targets at Freedom High School, Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor said.

I'm not sure that his plot was realistic to carry out," Freedom High School Principal Chris Farkas said later Wednesday. But still, word of the planned attack left members of the school's community shaken and shocked, he told reporters.

Cano is charged with possessing bomb-making materials and threatening to throw, project, place or discharge a destructive device. He also faces drug charges.

The fact that a tipster led to the former student's arrest in Tampa shows the importance of schools nationwide building a relationship with their communities, said MaryEllen Elia, Hillsborough County Public Schools superintendent.

"Someone realized it was very important that they share this information and that they help us address this issue," she told CNN. "I think it's very important that we make sure that people are aware that this kind of situation could occur anywhere."

I don't even understand how people can be so self-centred they don't care about other people... And even if they don't, they oughta be smart enough to realize that they will be serving time for killing people. Lots of time.

Most school shootings, bombings, ect. happen because the kid was bullied. And the said thing is it takes someone being killed to finally relize you gota grow the **** up and stop harassing other people. Pathetic.

People need to realise that things get a lot better once you leave school. People I'd have never socialised with in school are now some of the people that I'd drink with in clubs and would consider friends. Social status seems to completely disappear after high school, your differences become a good thing.
