It is a gif but its your eye sending signals to your brain on what your seeing then it uses either side to analyse it.
A good why is to make it turn direction is to think really really hard until you start shaking and it will change. PS: not my fault if you do it too hard a poop yourself.

I've looked at it for ages, all I can see is counter-clockwise. But the left brain fuctions suit me a lot better than the right brain fuctions.

Imma righty and the right side of my head hurts when i look at that....I dont think thats a good thing. :/
