FACT: If the US government existed from the moment the Universe was created (13.7 billion years ago) and gained $1000 in debt PER YEAR since the big bang, it still wouldn't even be as much debt as it is in now...... Life would need to go on for over a billion years more with that steady debt level until it reached the state that it's in now.

The USA has the HIGHEST percentage of its own countrymen incarcerated. Over 1% of all the Americans alive today are in jail; over 2.3 million.
This is a higher percentage than China, Russia, UK and every other country there is. The USA imprisons almost 5x more of its countrymen than the average country does.

For EACH of these prisoners, it costs YOU, the taxpayer, $25,000 to keep them behind bars for ONE YEAR. This means that, potentially, with America's 3 strike policy, you could get 3 minor warnings for any offences over your lifetime and you'd have 25 YEARS to reflect on how corrupt the US prison industry is...... And this would cost taxpayers $625,000 just for keeping you there......

OVER HALF of ALL inmates in ANY US prison are in there for minor drug offences, such as possession of cannabis.
This means that the US Government spends almost $30,000,000,000 ($30 billion) PER YEAR on housing inmates for minor drug offences..... Don't you agree that there are SO many more important things that they should be spending your money on, especially in the financial crisis that it's in at the moment? The combined expenditures of local governments, state governments, and the federal government for law enforcement and corrections total over $200 billion annually.

It's the new "Slave Labor".

You are missing the facts on how much money the US Government makes off of each inmate (of course the ones that are working).

They get paid 10 cents an hour (lets say) and are making clothes etc for companies like Mcdonalds etc.

That is just one of the things they have prison inmates doing.

So this is where all that US money is going.

I think the only reason marijuana isn't legal is because politicians think they will lose their credibility if they're pro something like that. When really, all you have to do is point out that there are no real cons to it.

If it really does cost 25k then something is wrong

Think about it, dude, they have to feed the prisoner, provide him / her with water and keep them in standards of living that couldn't be construed as cruelty to humans.

I say they just send all the murderers to the moon and see if they can survive,if they do,theyll have no way of coming back here

In 2005 it cost an average of $23,876 dollars per state prisoner. State prison spending varied widely, from $45,000 a year in Rhode Island to $13,000 in Louisiana.( guess you don't want to get arrested in Louisiana)
At year-end 2007 the United States had less than 5% of the world's population[26] and 23.4% of the world's prison and jail population (adult inmates).

Your claim about the number of prisoners in for Drug offenses is incorrect.

About 22% of the entire US prisoner population is in for drug offenses and more than 1/2 is in for violent crime.
"Nearly three quarters of new admissions to state prison were convicted of nonviolent crimes. Only 49 percent of sentenced state inmates were held for violent offenses. Perhaps the single greatest force behind the growth of the prison population has been the national "war on drugs." The number of incarcerated drug offenders has increased twelvefold since 1980. In 2000, 22 percent of those in federal and state prisons were convicted on drug charges."

Mandatory sentencing guidelines and the 3 strike policy have accounted for most of the growth in prisoner population, even while violent crime statistics have fallen sharply in the last 15 years..

I agree 1000% on this. Yes, 1000%. Politics and the government is all about precedent which I don't believe to be the right option. Like you said, they're afraid to lose the credibility and what not. If politicians grew some balls and went against the norm we would have a more stable and respected government.
