Jamey Rodemeyer, a 14-year-old boy from Williamsville, NY, took his life Sunday after what his parents claim was years of bullying because of struggles with his sexuality.

His parents, Tracy and Tim Rodemeyer, say that Jamey faced bullies for years, though things intensified in middle school, according to NBC 2. Jamey recently became a freshman at Williamsville North High School.

In the wake of their loss, the Rodemeyers hope to carry on a message of anti-bullying and acceptance. "To the kids who are bullying they have to realize that words are very powerful and what you think is just fun and games isn't to some people, and you are destroying a lot of lives," Jamey's father told WIVB.

Tracy Rodemeyer misses her son, but hopes the loss can still be used to teach a message of tolerance. "It took him away from our family way too early and we're just convinced that he had a purpose on this planet and it was to touch as many people as he could," she told NBC 2.

According to NBC, the Rodemeyers had gone to the school about the problem in the past. Jamey even sought counseling to learn to deal with the problem, but it seems it wasn't enough.

While they say their son seemed happy in the days leading up to the tragedy, his "It Gets Better" YouTube posting from May includes details about how intense the bullying was.

Through it all, Jayme remained outwardly optimistic. “That's all you have to do. Just love yourself and you're set. And I promise you, it'll get better,” he said in the video, which you can see in full below.

Gay bullying has been gaining increasing attention in the media, as a number of tragedies has brought the issue into the spotlight. Earlier this month the California State Senate passed "Seth's Law" a measure designed to curb anti-gay bullying in schools.

Wow why have you been responding then if you don't even get what I am saying? I think you might just understand actually but don't realize it because the past couple things you have said led me to believe that deep down you do get what I am saying...
LET ME BE CLEAR: In no way is it anyone elses fault or doing that this kid committed suicide. Never once was he faced with the sole decision of taking his own life. He ALWAYS had other options (i.e. to live...) he just chose not to go that route. It was easier for him to end his existence which was his own decision and nobody elses. Its not like he was put to death like Troy Davis last week. He could have continued his life, however crappy it was, he just did not want to.

Please don't get it twisted I am not for bullying, or gay bashing, or anything like that I am just saying when committing suicide only so much blame can be placed on an outside party because the definition of suicide is to take your own life, otherwise it would just be called murder.

If parents/ family bring it to court the bullies can be charged with manslaughter, meaning its not just the bullied persons fault

You are really not able to admit this fact but that is your own problem. Either way whatever anyone gets charged with has absolutely nothing to do with the INDIVIDUALS decision to take his OWN life. Nobody else did it and that's a fact guy. What are you even still posting for at this point if you are going to try and go from telling me im straight up wrong to saying that a party can be held partially liable in a court of law... Your missing the biggest point of all is that these people would not be charged with murder because guess what, it just didn't happen. The kid took his OWN life, it was a SUICIDE, if you fail to realize that suicide is something you do to yourself and that is why it is called that you are beyond the help of definitions, vocabulary, or even a court of law.

I agree that suicide is wrong and somewhat selfish, but it's understandable that people feel like this, I can relate to long time depression, and suicide is always a thought you can't get rid of.

You're a ****ing idiot, and I seriously hope that a moderator bans you for that ignorant post, you're either trolling or should be shot for stupidity.
i SERIOUSLY HOPE YOU GET BANNED AND YOUR COMPUTER BLOWS UP!

Let me pose my point once again, if I throw gasoline all over the house. Then set a match on a table. A 7 year old walks over and flicks the match. Am I responsible? Of Course!

What you are doing is trying to fuse bullying. Online bullying, tbh, I don't give two shits about it. Now when there are a group of kids constantly harassing you everyday, maybe to the point of sexual harassment, of course they are at fault. I don't know to what degree, but you cannot honestly say they had no fault in this.

BTW, how do you feel about homosexuals in general?

Tranquility.
I do feel sorry for the family and everyone who has lost him but I do not agree with "gay" marriage or dating. That's MY oppinion but he shouldn't have been bullied to the point where he killed himselfNo The kids who did it need to be expelled.

So you think the kids chose to be discriminated to the point of suicide?
