Jamey Rodemeyer, a 14-year-old boy from Williamsville, NY, took his life Sunday after what his parents claim was years of bullying because of struggles with his sexuality.

His parents, Tracy and Tim Rodemeyer, say that Jamey faced bullies for years, though things intensified in middle school, according to NBC 2. Jamey recently became a freshman at Williamsville North High School.

In the wake of their loss, the Rodemeyers hope to carry on a message of anti-bullying and acceptance. "To the kids who are bullying they have to realize that words are very powerful and what you think is just fun and games isn't to some people, and you are destroying a lot of lives," Jamey's father told WIVB.

Tracy Rodemeyer misses her son, but hopes the loss can still be used to teach a message of tolerance. "It took him away from our family way too early and we're just convinced that he had a purpose on this planet and it was to touch as many people as he could," she told NBC 2.

According to NBC, the Rodemeyers had gone to the school about the problem in the past. Jamey even sought counseling to learn to deal with the problem, but it seems it wasn't enough.

While they say their son seemed happy in the days leading up to the tragedy, his "It Gets Better" YouTube posting from May includes details about how intense the bullying was.

Through it all, Jayme remained outwardly optimistic. “That's all you have to do. Just love yourself and you're set. And I promise you, it'll get better,” he said in the video, which you can see in full below.

Gay bullying has been gaining increasing attention in the media, as a number of tragedies has brought the issue into the spotlight. Earlier this month the California State Senate passed "Seth's Law" a measure designed to curb anti-gay bullying in schools.

That video makes me want to cry

Nothing is worse than the pain that comes, being depressed and in a suicidal state is the worst thing to feel.

It isn't cowardice.

When someone is suicidal it means that they just want the pain to go away, but they don't think it will and can't deal with it. It isn't cowardice in the least, it is just too much to handle.

Rejection is a terrible feeling to experience. I myself actually at one point became heavily depressed with several suicidal thoughts in the period, but I can't compare to these people's pains

You are missing the point completely. This isn't just bullying its complete rejection.

Umm dude Africans were enslaving each other before anyone ever showed up and decided to bring the slaves to another location... What do you think they were living in some kind of tropical paradise over there? There were tribal warlords and they had slaves that they sold and traded just as it ended up happening in the early US. It isnt something that they had coming, it was already a incorporated part of their tribal society's...

And I really doubt I am missing the point as rejection is not something that can cause death either. It is the individuals inability to cope with the situation and his surroundings... if it was that bad the surroundings should have been modified to prevent his inability to deal with them. Not everyone can have their hand emotionally held through the whole worlds time, don't you forget at one point we lived in wild and dealt with our own problems instead of asking an entire society or culture to accept our personal problems and then on top of that force THEM to deal with that individuals inabilities? Excuse me but this leads to the weakening of a civilization, species, and society in my opinion.

you're letting those bullies win.

That is possibly the most idiotic conclusion ever, committing suicide is letting the bullies win? it isn't a game. It appears that you understand nothing of bullying, he committed suicide as living wasn't an option anymore, due to the ongoing bullying he received in school. I agree that suicide is wrong and somewhat selfish, but it's understandable that people feel like this, I can relate to long time depression, and suicide is always a thought you can't get rid of.

I see what you mean but imo it shows at least if not cowardice then a level of weakness, i know many people in my life who are in ****ed up situations that i can't imagine being in but they are strong and know life is too precious.

Yes of course it's a sign of weakness, they're rejected and bullied everyday of their lives over the fact they prefer to have sex with the same gender, if you aren't weak from that, then you aren't human.

1. Why the **** would anyone choose to be discriminated
2. If you believe we came from the wild and we should regress, well **** you. Life is precious as its only once and every living person should have the right to live it.
3. Not everyone is the damn same

Living was MOST CERTIANLY still an option for this young man... dont be so clouded in judgement and dont say things that literally are not true in any way...

I never said anyone should not have the right to live, or even regress... maybe they just dont have the ABILITY to survive in this world, but that isnt anyones fault but their own, or poor genetics.

It wasn't an option for him, which is quite evident as he killed himself, it isn't like he did it for shits and giggles you complete moron. You're only saying that as you think you'd never do it, but trust me, when you go through absolute rejection and huge depression you only see one option, that being sadly, suicide.
