Post: Have you served/thought about serving in the Army? (Forces)

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Well this may not be the best place to come, but i thought i'd post it on here anyway...

Im currently in college (UK) and looking for a apprenticeship/job - and with no luck as of the current climate no one can take on a fully qualified electrician, never mind a partially qualified one:/

So looking for other alternatives and the army just sticks out to me, but im just wondering is there anyone on here who is also considering going into it? This is also a question to the U.S membersSmile If you are, what's your thoughts about leaving home etc.? Or is there actually anyone that's going through/passed all the training and serving in Iraq or another country? Or have you served your time and went into another profession, what was your experience(s) like?

Thanks for reading and hopefully some good posts come out of this.

I have a cousin and several friends that are serving for the country as a means to pay for college.
Plus the experience is something only a few can say they have gone through.
Whatever your decision, good luck with everything Smile

I was very serious about joining the Air Force as a Fighter Pilot in my late teens. However, a military career isn't for someone who wants family...or to enjoy the things I love in life. Well, a Fighter Pilot for that matter. They don't want you to marry (I was already in the first year of dating my future wife), you'll be away for long periods of time, and you don't make squat. Personally, my fascination to fly jets is nowhere near my desire to have a family, to go home to my house everyday and kiss my wife rather than sleeping on a cot 5,000 miles from America, and to rake in some moolah.

It's not for everyone. Including me.

I kind of wanted to go into the army, but I am blind in one of my eyes (I have Glaucoma) so I couldn't join if I even wanted to :(

If I could though I think I would go into the army

I wanted to be a pilot, but they changed all the qualifications around and I don't pass it now. Here they make a lot of money, £33000 with flying pay, plus the fact you learn to fly for free which can then be taken with you when you leave and become a private or commercial pilot and rake in shit loads a year.

To me I think that seeing my wife everyday would, for lack of a better word, bore me. I think the fact of being away for months at a time would make seeing your wife all that more special, rather than how you describe it, going home every day and giving her a kiss. You can only do that so long before it becomes a habit for you and you do it because you have done it all them years. I think there would be no 'spark'.

Coming home from a tour, training etc after a couple months of not seeing her I think would be an amazing feeling. The thing is, I don't want to look back when I'm too old to join and wonder "what if?", or you have an unsuccessful marriage and you're too old to join, knowing that woman that you just divorced stopped you from living your dream.

My Dad was a pilot for a few years. He entered as an officer because he promised service for a free ride of college tuition. After his service, he went and got a job in mechanical engineering. He too wanted to be a family man.

The thing is, to get the best chance of becoming a pilot here, you can't marry. If I did and got in because of other factors, I feel like she would always worry about me on tour. Military families have to relocate every few years, too. That's new schools for the kids, new friends, and maybe even new languages. You could be put on a base in Guam, or Korea, or some other foreign place.

I grew up in a loving family and I couldn't of had it better. I want my future children to enjoy what I had as well. It jst proves that we're all different! I wouldn't say I killed a dream by opting out of the military, because I went into law and feel as if that it's my dream job.

Yes, I'm determined to, if I cannot find a decent job profession by the time I'm in my first year of college.

I was thinking about doing this and going into research side or being a engineer.
However.....i decided that i wanted to be the first person in my family to go uni.
My mum would be far more proud of me doing that then joining the army. Combined with the fact i wish to run my own life and not follow orders.
