Post: Have you served/thought about serving in the Army? (Forces)
01-07-2012, 02:24 PM #1
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Well this may not be the best place to come, but i thought i'd post it on here anyway...

Im currently in college (UK) and looking for a apprenticeship/job - and with no luck as of the current climate no one can take on a fully qualified electrician, never mind a partially qualified one:/

So looking for other alternatives and the army just sticks out to me, but im just wondering is there anyone on here who is also considering going into it? This is also a question to the U.S membersSmile If you are, what's your thoughts about leaving home etc.? Or is there actually anyone that's going through/passed all the training and serving in Iraq or another country? Or have you served your time and went into another profession, what was your experience(s) like?

Thanks for reading and hopefully some good posts come out of this.

It's all about what YOU want to do. My parents don't fully support me going to the naval academy, but at the end of the day I won't be living with them for the rest of my life. I want to go out there and do things that I WANT to do, and I think that's the only way you can truly appreciate life. Doesn't matter what you're doing or how much money you're making. As long as you're content with where you are in life, you're doing a good job.

It's not uncommon for people to have fantastic(fake) view on the military after playing video games. However you do not want to be making life changing decisions because of a video game.

Maybe I see it as all the low lifes go into it for the wrong reason. Of course, not everybody is a low life. I didn't mean it like that, but you get the people who are all like "Yeah, gonna go army and **** people up." I don't want to work with people with that attitude. The RAF Regiment protects bases that have RAF things there. I think they capture runways and airports too. They go outside and look for people trying to attack the bases. Seems like a load of good lads looking through the FB group. The training is what's getting my too. I get do 1 and a half mile no problem. But doing it in the time, I'm about 1-2 mins off, although I don't run on flat ground.

Yeah, now'a'days anyway with all these kids thinking they're 'gangsters' walking round with guns etc. and wouldn't have a 2nd thought about firing it because they haven't realised the consequences, the streets are getting dangerous:/ I see what you mean, of course there will be the minority who have that attitude about it which is completely the wrong way to think about it... but i would like to see there faces when there out on the front line getting shot at xD I would consider going into the RAF but to fly I've heard you have to have a fitness level on par to an athlete - which I don't have:p & for the run you have levels of which different roles can complete the jog in - but ive been told to try to get it under 10 minutes 30 seconds as "they wouldnt want a chef being fitter than a soldier"

Yeah it is tuff to try and convince them its safe and what you really want to do, but good luck to you and your future :]

Plus the experience is something only a few can say they have gone through.
Whatever your decision, good luck with everything Smile

I was very serious about joining the Air Force as a Fighter Pilot in my late teens. However, a military career isn't for someone who wants family...or to enjoy the things I love in life. Well, a Fighter Pilot for that matter. They don't want you to marry (I was already in the first year of dating my future wife), you'll be away for long periods of time, and you don't make squat. Personally, my fascination to fly jets is nowhere near my desire to have a family, to go home to my house everyday and kiss my wife rather than sleeping on a cot 5,000 miles from America, and to rake in some moolah.

It's not for everyone. Including me.

Yeah I understand were you are coming from, it isn't for everyone and the sacrifices you have to make can sometimes mean not having the things most other people have - but as said, the routine of coming home from work and seeing the same person day in-day out would get boring after a few years I think - although in most cases it probably doesn't :p and yeah it isn't for everyone, but good luck to you and your future Smile

That was my thinking of it the last few months - and with no luck finding any sort of employment I find this is the last resort, Well good luck in finding a job that you want to do :]

I was thinking about doing this and going into research side or being a engineer.
However.....i decided that i wanted to be the first person in my family to go uni.
My mum would be far more proud of me doing that then joining the army. Combined with the fact i wish to run my own life and not follow orders.

Although graduating from uni is a proud moment and all - the costs at the minute are far to high for a regular family like mine to take on without struggling a lot... a; although I do think my mum would rather me take the route than the army - I find learning in a 'classroom' boring:/ where in the middle of no where trying to fix a generator is something I'd much more prefer:p

Good luck to you and your future :]

That is another factor which i think I'll find hard, especially with the closeness of our family:/ but its something that I think I can over come:P

You get trained to have fitness like an athlete over the 32 weeks, but to go into it you have to have a certain level of fitness. 10 mins 30 is the official time as stated on their website, however reading through their facebook page people make it in 9-9:30 mins. Being the fastest may not always be the best. People say if you can help the slower ones meet the time that looks good, because you're showing you think about others as well, which is what they want. People get 60+ press ups and average about 40+ sit ups in a minute. Then you also have a 3 day "interview" being watched all the time. This involves history, fitness and a mock battle scenario which is meant to be hell. You need to have mental fitness and physical fitness. Telling your self not to ring the bell the P.I's jungle in your face (if you ring it you give up and you're going home). It's hard work, but training yourself you can make it.

Marines is a ****ing joke. I'd rather go into the Air Force ROTC and go into a good career field. Afterwards there's always the private contractors and government agencies that offer careers who've worked in the AF.

heres my opinion , i am disciplined and i do have the body to join the army . However , Im to scared i have considered it often . But i have a family that can provide me with an education. I do have much respect for all branches of military . However , it is not my lifestyle . If you do join well all i can say is the best of luck . Also , their is alot of psychological factors and post-war effects when adapting to society . Personally i belive in peace , in my opinon wars are best left in the history books.

Well, I'm not too physically fit or adept. I am not one who would be willing to risk his life so easily. After seeing what my country has been doing to it's troops, and the amount of veterans with post-tramatic syndrome. Then count in those without jobs, and it leads me to a no.

I would only be willing to risk my life, or fight for my country. If, and only if I believed it was not only a just cause, but it would need to be great.

I unfortunately dont quite understand the American military... but yeah as said - if you go in the air force you can always go and be a commercial pilot afterwards..

I too have respect for all our men/women in the forces and it does take a lot of thought before handing the application form in... thankyou and best of luck to yourself for your education and future:]
