Post: Have you served/thought about serving in the Army? (Forces)

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Well this may not be the best place to come, but i thought i'd post it on here anyway...

Im currently in college (UK) and looking for a apprenticeship/job - and with no luck as of the current climate no one can take on a fully qualified electrician, never mind a partially qualified one:/

So looking for other alternatives and the army just sticks out to me, but im just wondering is there anyone on here who is also considering going into it? This is also a question to the U.S membersSmile If you are, what's your thoughts about leaving home etc.? Or is there actually anyone that's going through/passed all the training and serving in Iraq or another country? Or have you served your time and went into another profession, what was your experience(s) like?

Thanks for reading and hopefully some good posts come out of this.

I've thought about this for the past couple of years, currently thinking about my college applications and ways I can make it stronger. Plan on applying to the Naval Academy and serving as an officer in the Marine Corps after graduating.

I wouldn't really mind leaving home, it would definitely be something new and something not everyone gets to experience but that's kind of why I'm drawn to it. I wish you the best of luck man :y:

Daddy's home.
I plan on going into the RAF regiment once I get fitter. My parents obviously don't want me to but I have no problems. I'm aware of what could happen to me. Sure, going away for ages is going to be hard on you, but you can visit them or they can visit you. If you want to go in as a sparky then your parents will be worried, but assuring them you won't be in any danger (unless you do something on the frontline) might calm them down. Look on the army/RAF/Navy websites for jobs and get a booklet about the job you want. It will tell you your role and things you'll be doing. Read it with your parents and show them it's not as bad as they think it would be. Being a sparky in a warzone I think would most likely being in camp, a 'secure' -ish place (still have threat of RPG's and mortars) but it's not a high threat as being outside the wire.

It just depends on what you want to do and what they will train you to do. What you'll fix will depend on where you go. Looking at the websites for the job you want and getting a booklet about it is the first step then take it from there.

Hope that helps.

Yerh, i have been told applying for jobs etc. with time served does make the application stronger which is helpful... the experiences you get can be once in a life time and something you can tell your grandchildren about:p Thanks and best of luck to you and the choices you make :y: Smile

Well you have plenty of time to think and think hard about it! Good luck mate if you do ever decide to sign up. Smile

Yerh reading through it did give me a few ideas for things to tell my mum an dad... only being 17 too they are worried that i wont make it to 20 but im trying my best to convince them. Getting fitter is also another thing i need to do - the 2.4km jog you have to do would wipe me out:'Winky Winky never mind all the training after that. Although i've been told if im needed on the frontline they would ask me to drop everything and go up - which i would do... but im planning on not telling them that part:p I have went down to the career office and got a application and information about all the different roles and think that its the best way forward to get the qualifications and experience required now a days & i do think it is like 70% will be in camps and bases however there is a chance i could have to go outside the wire...

Thanks for your post... Goodluck with the choices you makeSmile

Would you not cut it down to where you could get into the army? Not smoking at all myself i have heard its hard - but with enough will-power, encouragement and knowing you could get a amazing experience out of quitting do you not think you could do it?

Im actually at the moment, thinking about joining the Marines. My family has a history of joining the armed forces and I am thinking of upholding that tradition. Not to sure.

Ahh, i like the idea of you holding that tradition and with previous family members that have been the i suspect your parents being a bit more comfortable with you signing up? Well good luck with your choicesSmile

There's more of a chance being run over in the hight street than getting shot so I hear, and that's for infantry. There's just something about the army I don't want to do. Maybe I see it as all the low lifes go into it for the wrong reason. Of course, not everybody is a low life. I didn't mean it like that, but you get the people who are all like "Yeah, gonna go army and **** people up." I don't want to work with people with that attitude. The RAF Regiment protects bases that have RAF things there. I think they capture runways and airports too. They go outside and look for people trying to attack the bases. Seems like a load of good lads looking through the FB group. The training is what's getting my too. I get do 1 and a half mile no problem. But doing it in the time, I'm about 1-2 mins off, although I don't run on flat ground.
