To and fro the island.
I'm going to make an assumption as to what we're talking about in here, so please, criticize me heavily if I'm off base.

Yes, the situation with Iran is a very, very slippery slope. Iran has some very large nuclear ambitions that have concerned the world for years. Because of this, the United States and the European Union have imposed sanctions and embargoes against Iran in an attempt to curb their ambition altogether. This isn't all clean-cut, though. Iran is responsible for forty-percent of the world's oil, and has threatened to close off that oil to the rest of the world if we continue to impose these sanctions.

Imagine what would happen if forty-percent of the world's oil was suddenly gone. Not only would gas prices skyrocket worldwide, but it would obviously create an oil shortage. Some trade would be gravely hurt, and the transportation of basic necessities like food might be slowed substantially due to insufficient fuel to transport it. While the U.S. does have emergency oil reserves, it would take time for them to become operational; too long, perhaps, because the economy would be declining rapidly, and would almost certainly reach the "depression" status. With all of this in mind, yes, the United States sent military ships to the Strait of Hormuz (where the oil comes from) to attempt to make it impossible for Iran to close off their oil. The EU also sent one of their most powerful ships (the name escapes me at the moment), to assist the United States in confronting the Iranian ambitions.

Note that this is not only a threat for the United States. The EU is also heavily involved, and for good reason. The economies of both the EU and the US are global; meaning if one goes down, it'll negatively impact other economies, as well. The EU debt crisis and the United State's economic recession both hurt one another, and is one of the reasons these economic downturns have lasted so long. If forty-percent of the world's oil was to go away, both the EU and US would fall even further economically, and that could very well snowball into the greatest economic failure to date.

This is a very, very slipper slope and something we all definitely should be well informed about.

Rape had been done many times before... Doesn't make it any less of a dick move, pun intended.

Please tell me what your plan is to get oil.

Oil is going to run out, that is a fact. The time to remove the reliance on oil is now! The sooner we start to get away from it the better it'll be when the oil is gone.

It's not that clean-cut. If we lost 40% of our oil right now, the U.S. economy would be so damaged that there wouldn't be any money to invest into new fuel sources. We do need to reduce oil reliance, and we are, but it's not something that can be done overnight. I definitely think that the attention the government is putting into alternative fuel sources needs to continue, and even grow, but we can't just say "**** oil" and let Iran close the Strait of Hormuz.

Point is, yes, we need to reduce our reliance and we are, but it won't be a quick process by any means.

That article made me laugh. The US needs to go back to the old big stick diplomacy and strike these sand ******s and confiscate their oil fields so we can make gasoline more affordable. I hate paying $3.85 a gallon.
