Post: Multiplayer: The cancer of the video game industry?

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Cory Davis, the lead designer behind the up and coming game Spec Ops: The Line, has recently spoken out against multiplayer being attached to video games like a "cancerous growth".

His argument stems from the fact that he and his team have been forced to add a multiplayer component to their game by their publisher, despite not wanting to do so. In his eyes, the multiplayer completely detracts from the singleplayer as the game was inteneded to be a meaningful story told through gameplay.

Now in his eyes, all the team has is a "low-quality Call of Duty clone in third-person" and this is becoming increasingly popular in the video games industry. Inspired by the success of such games, publishers are now wanting to emulate the COD experience which is leading to buggy, rushed and unnatural feeling multiplayer game modes.

I'm not sure which way to think. I love the concept of multiplayer; interacting real life friends and even making new ones whilst playing your favourite video game. However, I can't help but notice that some multiplayer modes on new games are just a copy of the more successful games, and development time is wasted on an online mode that will never be used.

What do you think? Would you trade off a decent campaign in order to get a botched together multiplayer, or would you rather get a single player only game with an intriguing and complete story?

They should suck it up to be honest. They KNOW that multiplayer is necessary, and their publisher did them a favour by forcing a multiplayer aspect into the game. It's like going to Chicago and opening up a pizza store (which is perfectly acceptable) but only having cheese pizza, that's it with no toppings. The pizza industry THRIVES on variation with pizza so why the hell would you not include it, even if your wonderful cheese pizza is to die for?

I get it; they want some sort of separation from COD and BF. But for 1, the name is spec ops, so immediately little cod players think it's some sort of related content. Then to not add MP is just stupid.

It's really bad that everyone has to mention call of duty in every discussion about multiplayer. When there are actually some really good innovative multiplayer games out there. Sad that every game is compared to call of duty even ones that are not Fps.

It's the evolution of this industry. Most FPS shooters have the same, bland story line. I doubt spec ops: the line, was any different.

You're correct, it is the way forward but in my opinion maybe they would have been better breaking the mold and creating a really great single player game. The issue with SP games though is and always will be replay-ability. I suppose that's why multiplayer is the future.

Why does everyone compare any smartphone to an iphone? It just goes that way. It's the alpha succeeder in the industry and anyone who says "why" is simply either to stupid to grasp the reason, or too lazy to care.

Phones are different...All phones call and have different os. So what you're saying is it's ok to compare bf3 to mw3 even though more effort went into making bf3 and mw3 could have been done is a big dlc..just because mw3 is a bigger game....yeah ooook..Comparing a non fps to cod is the most retarded thing I have ever seen..Thats like comparing an iphone to a bike..Drack

Nothing wrong with multi-player. But it's irritating when people will buy a game just for endless matches of shooting people online. Games like CoD don't really have much depth in the storyline and just rely on multi-player.

That's why in my eyes it would have been nice to see a game that changed that up, and focused on storyline instead. Now we just have another poor CoD clone unfortunately, and it's becoming a saturated market.

I think that story is much more fun and important. I think that once UBISOFT added multiplayer to Assassin's Creed, the game just didn't seem that great anymore to me. Revelations and Brotherhood had such short story lines because of multiplayer. Assassin's Creed II had it right. I've been looking for a long campaign only game but it seems there's nothing out there anymore since I've played mostly everything and all games these days have dumb multiplayer.
