Cory Davis, the lead designer behind the up and coming game Spec Ops: The Line, has recently spoken out against multiplayer being attached to video games like a "cancerous growth".
His argument stems from the fact that he and his team have been forced to add a multiplayer component to their game by their publisher, despite not wanting to do so. In his eyes, the multiplayer completely detracts from the singleplayer as the game was inteneded to be a meaningful story told through gameplay.
Now in his eyes, all the team has is a "low-quality Call of Duty clone in third-person" and this is becoming increasingly popular in the video games industry. Inspired by the success of such games, publishers are now wanting to emulate the COD experience which is leading to buggy, rushed and unnatural feeling multiplayer game modes.
I'm not sure which way to think. I love the concept of multiplayer; interacting real life friends and even making new ones whilst playing your favourite video game. However, I can't help but notice that some multiplayer modes on new games are just a copy of the more successful games, and development time is wasted on an online mode that will never be used.
What do you think? Would you trade off a decent campaign in order to get a botched together multiplayer, or would you rather get a single player only game with an intriguing and complete story?
