Valve's 'steambox' name and details released at CES By: Cade
Finally, the long awaited details of the glorious 'steambox' have been revealed by Xi3 and Steam at the Consumer Electronics Show. The small linux box has been named 'Piston' and will be modeled after Xi3's X7A mini-computer.
CMO of Xi3, David Politis, says the new Piston will offer 1 TB of internal storage and the parts inside, such as the CPU and RAM are upgradable.
Xi3 kept its mouth shut about the prices of the Piston, but it should be based off of it's X7A mini-computer which comes in at about $1000.
The demo unit of the Piston at CES was packed with an IO board with one ethernet port, 1/8" audio in/out, SPDIF optical audio, four USB 3.0 ports, four USB 2.0 ports (with one dedicated to keyboard input), four eSATAp ports, two Mini Display Port ports and one DisplayPort/HDMI port.
Here's the video, because apparently four paragraphs is too much to read.

fro $1000 just get a gaming pc thats full sized it will have more power and be able to play actual pc games. i hate these mobile cpu gaming items they have no power compared to a full sized gaming pc for $1000 i can get a future proof beast. where every year you will be adding a new cpu and graphics, ram

The X7A is $1000, this is simply a prediction.
How can you even say that you can build one better when you don't even have the specs?

the strongest it can get is a amd apu You must login or register to view this content. and i highly doubt it because it is a large chip and that little thing will take all of it to keep it cool. and it has the iso on the back. i can tell you it will be valves version of ouya

I mean if you really wanted you could build something better without knowing the specs. I seriously doubt that thing is packing dual Xeons with 64 GB of ram and 2 680s in SLI. But then again the kid knows nothing. This "console" isn't catered to the people who go out and build their systems. This is the console that console gamers are going to want to buy to play PC games, that will be a significant improvement over their 7 year old hardware. It's for console gamers, not PC gamers.

you have to make the average joe don't get the wrong parts, and make sure they can easily add the parts, similar to a mac pro with the slide out i doubt that. also it will be hard since we are most likely dealing with micro chips

Most likely the chipset limits what parts you can fit. Which means I guess your only going to be able to buy from Xi3.
That model is a full desktop and not the steambox
