Usually you can't eyeball what an ounce looks like, different strains are different densities. Plus the buds could be broken up etc. Honestly if you're buying an ounce your best bet is to have the guy weigh the weed in front of you or bring your own scale and weigh it, depending on the location where you are buying.

Best I can describe is a sandwich size ziplock bag, filled. It really depends as different strains weigh differently. I suggest buying a digital scale.

I second what Rath said, and it can also be compacted as well so it's hard to tell.
Best bet is to get it weighed, that way you'll if you're getting the right amount you paid for

Somewhere along those lines.. and note the pencil for scale. And on ounce is 28 grams, real light. Best bet, have him weigh it in front of you. That's key, have him clear the scale and put the nugs on while you're there.
