(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Given my (in)sane car obsession, a term I often come across, and that is more than often misused, is “RICE.” Most people generalize that term unfairly and match it up with Japanese cars instantly. For starters, the Internet has agreed on the acronym of R.I.C.E to play out as Race Inspired Cosmetic Enhancements. Nowhere in that explanation does the meaning hint at the cars having to be Japanese to be rice.

Looking back in the early 2000’s, when Fast and the Furious first hit the big screens, this type of “RICE” modifications may have been acceptable; although, borderline hideous. I admit, I thought having a sick bodykit and a massive wing on your car was cool, but I soon realized it wasn’t. Pointless visual modifications throw your car into the category of RICE. Not to slay ethnicities, but a lot of Mexicans are the ones who still continue to contribute to the inglorious world of RICE modifications. Take a Honda Civic for example. I’ve seen a countless number of them with chrome wheels that barely squeeze inside the wheel well. In addition to an unnecessarily huge wing on a car barely pushing out 125 horsepower, they throw on hugely hideous bodykits, hood vents, roof scoops, and trashy chrome lights. Now, THAT is RICE. All of the modifications are cosmetic and race inspired; yet, they serve to purpose given performance.

I’m not bashing modifying a car, but there is a proper way to go about it if you’re serious about improving the way it drives. Start with suspension, tires, and brakes. Things that seem irrelevant play the biggest factors. Unless you’re SexySolo, you aren’t driving a Ferrari. And most of us on here don’t. I love to modify cars. The way I see it, a car from the factory is limited and tamed. Through hours of hard work, part swapping and eagerly waiting at your doorstep for the UPS guy to arrive, you end up with a car that is much more than what you originally had. And all of that can be done without a huge spoiler and wide bodykit. I don’t see why one would modify an Exotic car, but not all of us can get at them. Since that’s my case, I find it enjoyable to buy a cheaper, older car and put a little more money into it to unleash its fury.

A real car enthusiast loves and appreciates all cars. Or, they have legitimate reasons for not liking a car. They don’t use the term RICE when it doesn’t fit. To put it short, RICER’s aren’t only Japanese cars, but ALL cars. I’ve seen BMW’s and even the precious American Muscle that is Mustang riced. Don’t believe me? Check these pics out.

RICE..

Now, there's many more that fit both of the categories, but I just picked a few. As you can see, JDM, USDM, EDM, and all other places that manufacture cars can fall into both playing fields. So, next time, please be mindful when you use the term RICE.

BUT.. at the end of the day, it's your car. Do what you will, and don't give a fuck about what others say if it makes you happy.

Those cars are not RICE cause I know a thing or two about JDM and Japanese import tuning. Done up right and they are amazing cars to drive. Its just the way you set them up Toke (Not Happy or Sad)

P.S.... Supras are terrible compared to Skyline GT-R's. And you couldnt even get a Skyline over here in the U.S. boosting its value well past what a Supra can bring.

And Toke give 420 a break... Honda's can be tuned to be right up with FD's. I have seen lots of properly set up Honda Civic's that look nice, but would whoop up on a FD. But with that being said FD's are not slow by any means. They can be a strong car to deal with.

I am sorry 420 (Not Happy or Sad) From 1 Honda lover to the next, man...

the skylines where never crash tested and i know quite a bit about honda's and i'm busting 420's balls and i hate to tell you the supra is better than the skyline, stronger engine block by a long shot as the 7m 1jz, 2jz are all boost whores and u can have a ridiculous 7m build for a very little money. and honda's need pretty heavy mods to get to the supra, rx7, skyline, z, level but they are alot lighter so they are quicker with less power.

But yea, that R34 on 2F&F actually looked good, even with the decals and shit. Tokyo Drift was decent in terms of visual cars.. that Evo was proper and the Z and many other cars. But yea, those cars are great platforms to start anyways.

Have you heard of Honda-Tech? There was a build thread on there where a guy build an 90's Prelude. It looked so DAMN RICE, but considering it was a 10 year build, I respect the car. The parts put into the car were impressive, but it looked so trashy haha

And yea, any car can be made into something great. I saw another build on there where a dude from Brazil build an 8th gen civic running 9's in a 1/4 mile! haha

because preludes are trash, should have made them rear wheel drive with f20C engines.

You of all should know any - well most any - car can be made into something epic. Here's that thread, check it out. You must login or register to view this content. Car looks trash, but under the hood is something else!

Also, here's probably the nicest Prelude I've ever seen...

yea its a ricer but its got good stuff under the engine but the prelude looks like a car that should be rear wheel drive and they shoul have made it rear wheel drive, as its long slim, light would make a good 240sx competitor for drifting

I've never really been a fan of the older Preludes until I saw that. I realized its potential.

Same here, until I saw some good ones around (I saw one with Volks Happy ) I really didnt care for them... Hey 420 what do you think about the Element being tuned? I saw a lowered Element the other day with a slightly larger exhaust and some rays look alikes... Thing really looked nice, not a ricer at all. I wish I got some pics but I was on the road :/

I'm not the biggest fan of them, but I don't mind. Man, I really want some TE37's but they are so freakin' expensive!
