Today Will Be Different
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); I've been thinking about this particular decision for awhile now, and I know it's what I want to do. In my opinion it's better than sitting around the house all day or working a nine-to-five job. I'm also aware that I could die or be severely injured and deal with the complications it brings for the rest of my life. I've also kept it a secret from both my parents, even though my mom somewhat found out when I let her borrow my laptop. Although she didn't mention too much about it, she did seem concerned. And I can't even begin to imagine what my father would say... honestly I shouldn't be too worried about it because both of my parents were in the Air Force.

But anyway, for the longest time I've always wanted to be a Marine. And as of late, I've decided to get serious about it. I still need to go talk to a recruiter, and discuss a contract, take the ASVAB and take care of other things. I also need to get my last four credits to graduate, which I should have done like three months ago but I decided to not register a full school year of classes back when I was a Junior which is now affecting me in the long run. However I could be a poolee and go into the DEP or delayed entry program. So then I'd technically be sworn into the United States Marine Corps as a recruit.

But that isn't where the whole dying or being severely injured part comes into play. This however is where it does, I'm 110% sure that I want my MOS to be 0311. Now obviously at bootcamp all recruits are trained and required to score with the M16 regardless of MOS. Mainly because every Marine is a rifleman. And if anyone is wondering what my particular MOS is... it's a rifleman which is a part of infantry. I mainly want to take that route to get some combat experience, and as long as I score high on the ASVAB there is a really good chance that I could get an invitation to join MARSOC which basically is the Marines special forces. Even if I don't get invited I could still apply, but you have to meet the criteria and a certain amount of years in the Marines.

I just don't know how to tell my parents that I'm enlisting in the Marines, much less telling them my MOS and that I plan on going into MARSOC. I have a feeling that my parents would be disappointed, but at the same time, pleased with my decision and that I'll be doing something for not just me, but for friends, for people I don't even know, and for the country that I live in. And I cannot lie, the thought of dying is something that is in the back of my mind, but I try to ignore it as much as possible. I also think about how my parents would feel if they lost me, seeing how I'm their only son.

Opinions? Tips on how to break the news to them etc? Anything will be appreciated.

Just be open and honest with them bro, even if they have concerns or disagree at first, I'm sure they'll support you in whatever you do. You just have to remember that, as your parents, your happiness and your safety is at the top of their list.

I would just sit them down together formally, pre-telling them you have something to discuss or to tell them (perhaps over dinner or something), and just go from there.

Good luck bro, it's nice to see people with ambition and courage.

Thought that this was a coming out of the closet thread lol (espeacially when I read the first paragraph)

anyways... Just tell them, it's your life! and you're 18 (I assume) your parents will be against it at first, but they'll come around.

My advice talk to them as soon as possible, the longer you leave it the harder it going to be.
As to how to tell them I don't know how to even begin to be able to help you with that. Apart from being straight with them you wish to take this route over the air force.

Just say it to them out straight. If they love you they'll be pleased you're doing what you want to do and support you completely.

First off let me thank you for even considering to volunteer into the armed forces. People like you are the reason we have the luxury of choosing whether or not we want to be on the frontlines.

With that out of the way I just want you to know that being in the military is a huge responsibility. Time away from your family, friends, and most of society is not easy for many people. Make sure it is something that you can handle. If you have a girlfriend, consider how that will strain the relationship, if you don't...well you're probably better off staying like that.

Now what other options have you considered outside of the military? Do you want to go to college eventually and have a profession outside of the military? Are you thinking about enlisting because you don't quite know what you want to do yet, and just need a buffering period?

If you do want have a profession after the military, is there any way that your time in the military could help you succeed in that profession? Whether it be the local police department, FBI, CIA, or any other federal agencies. Obviously there are many roles within in the military but right now I'm only looking at your interest in the infantry.

I was considering enlisting straight out of high school, didn't really know what I wanted to do with my life and thought the military would provide an environment in which I could learn and experience things that would hopefully guide me through life. I might've been right but now I won't really know because between the time that I had these thoughts and my high school graduation I was able to figure things out. Now I'll be studying business in college.

My point with that is that you need ask yourself many questions and figure out what you want to do in life, and if you think the military can be a part of your life plan then go for it. You don't need to explain yourself to anyone. Do whatever you think is best for YOU, and if that means serving your country then nothing or no one should be able to stop you. Not to mention you will learn great discipline, experience things in many new places and always be able to stand proudly as a Marine.

Best of Luck
