(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Been a little bit of an earthquake in recent months as 3D printing gets more useful.
It's been used to make robotic arms, a toothbrush in your mouth made just for you. A gun along with other products , are starting to be used at a mass production level.
Of course we are a little way off home 3D printed items but does bring up a big question.

Do you own the right to make a replacement for something that broke say an iPod case by downloading the plans off the net?
Do gun laws apply to 3D printed arms.

We had 3D tv now 3D printers are coming to a home near you allowing you to make replacement parts or something new. Even plans for 3D printer shops to start appearing around the world.
Of course 3D printing has been around a good 25 years a couple of the uses are medical mainly. Tailored made parts on the cheap Smile

Used a 3D printer yet? I have lovely bit of kit but still think it's a way off being useful material wise it still plastic.

Totally agree.
I think 3D will be the next big thing, as soon as the price drops a little.

Like you said, Its been around now for over 25 years and, just like most other things eventually the price will start to drop.

I think now we have main technology things out of the way (Phones, PC's, TV's etc) people aren't working on these no more as the price is just too low and the market isn't as profitable as it used to be so they're searching for the next best thing.. 3D printing.

Think about it. 10 years ago you could get a camera phone for about £400.. Can get a phone with a camera now for less than £30!

So as soon as people start making cheap 3D printers the market will explode.

As for the rights for making a mobile phone case/screen etc.. I'm sure some companies will try to argue it, But we can get cheap 'knock offs' now on the internet, Theres just too much for the main companies to deal with.

If you look at some of the stuff that are out there that has actually been built with a 3D printer you'll be amazed.. as was I.

Another 5 years, EVERYBODY will have a 3D printer replacing their Epson printers Winky Winky

If they come to households then there will be many types of laws put in place. Also I think you will probably have to own a license to have one in your home

Nah they won't let you 3D print stuff for a replacement. If you do you'll get a cease and desist letter and then summoned to court and sued for hundreds of thousands of dollars for printing something you don't own.

Not possible.
Only made some of the shell used for a gun not the bullets need metal for that.

In my line of work, 3D printing, SLS, SLA and FDM are huge production boosters. When you're able to pump out parts that are super accurate and require little machine time including setup, it saves so much money and time.

It's not very far off that these systems will replace the old X Y Z CNC Milling and Turning Centers that I work on.

If I sent you a CAD drawling do you think you could machine it for me or would you get into trouble with the company you work for?

It's just an inquiry, but if it could be done I'd appreciate it. It may or may not be an auto sear for a particular handgun.

inb4 someone says keep the discussion on topic
