I'd like to point out that the family/friends calling those phones of the missing people were ringing, however it is now be brought up that if a phone is in another country, it'll still ring regardless if it's been turned off.
But now something very interesting, a popular Japanese messenger (much like WhatsApp) has reported several missing peoples phones show them as online (so the phones are/were 100% on).
As someone mentioned this same incident happened before with Air France, and the plane was found 1 year later at the bottom of the ocean.
My personal opinion. Inside job. Why?
The Black Box inside the plane is built to withstand explosions, even if the plane was to explode the black box would still operate, I have a feeling it was an inside job and they somehow knew how to discount any signals being sent out from the plane. This is all speculation and I'm sure as time goes on more info will give us a better idea.
The black box doesn't broadcast information, it's just an in-flight data recording system to log information about controls, senors, and conversation in the cockpit. The only thing that broadcast any signal are the transponders, mainly for air traffic control and radar purposes. Even then they can be shut off, albeit an 'unidentified' aircraft pops up on radar which raises immediate suspicion. Usually the aircraft is asked to identify themselves, if there is no response they'll scramble some jets as a show of force. So it's likely that there could have been possible military involvement, but no one knows.
