We’ve never quite understood the clamour for the notoriously-addictive Flappy Bird to be made available to download again. Anyone who had succumbed to its infuriating charm would already have it installed on their mobile device, and anyone who never downloaded it wouldn’t know what they were missing.

Anyway.

An almost pixel-perfect clone of the Dong Nguyen classic has made its way to the top of the Apple App Store for free apps on iPhone, and behind the Microsoft Office programs on iPad.

The game was released on March 29 by Animated Emoji and does give a cursory credit to dotGears, Vietnamese developer Nguyen’s company.

Users have been bombarding the developer on Twitter with queries as to whether he is behind the new game, but he hasn’t tweeted for several days.

While the game does almost certainly not mark the official, long-promised return of Flappy Bird, its unusual that Apple has not acted to remove it, having at one point started blocking any app with ‘flappy’ in the title.

Flappy Bird: New Season is almost identical to the original, although the screen seems to shake a bit harder when you inevitably fail than we remember.

Maybe we’ll just have one more go on Flappy Bird to check…
