Taken from my site, should be obvious what I think the answer is and the game should take a longer break between releases.
Call Of Duty sacred cows the big problem?
Call of duty like any series is based on a series of sacred cows key to the overall formula of the game. Call of duty sacred cows the big problem hyperbole could be but customers fit the mold based on these design choices. Over time customers start to become bored or had enough of a series so you need to change the core in order to get people interested. These cows need to be looked at, of course the series won’t be able to repeat the past high water marks. Biggest problem the series has right now is trying is keep certain cows and attract new fans to the series by changing other cows. Call of duty 4 created most of the current formula alienated some of the older fans but attached a massive army of new fans which has carried the series forward. Only so long a game can carry on using the same ideas before people move on from the series wanting more. Series has changed some minor elements of it game mechanics from the unlock system to the killstreak system.
Following are some of the core sacred cows within the series formula and why the game is so successful.
Unlocks:
Radar:
Weapon balance:
Map design:
Health regeneration:
Kill times:
Art style and design:
Killstreaks:
Here the reasons why the series should revisit the above.
Unlocks:
Series has touched on unlocks with some major changes happening we gone from challenges being required to tokens unlocking items. However when it comes to certain items still have level gated system or completed this goal to unlock said item. Out of all the cows this one the series has changed the most compared to some on the list.
Frustrating having to grind out the same goal on every weapon or being forced to hit a certain point to gain a weapon.
Red dots being the most obvious example I want a red dot why should I be forced to complete the same goal over and over on something which is just a skin has no impact on the gun. Camos I can understand the logic behind the challenges along with goal idea.
Radar:
When it comes to game mechanics radar has quite a big impact compared to what people think. Throw in map design along with kill times radar becomes important giving away accurate locations towards the shot location. This does make certain play styles far less viable as a result map design along with kill times also play a role in it.
From my experience people start to chase red dots as it becomes one of the biggest sources of information given to the player. Throw in footsteps you start to see why moving becomes one of the worse choices a player can make. Stealth is powerful as a result due to this design choice.
Not sure which option is the best when it comes to changing how radar works but halo does not give an accurate location rough location.
Weapon balance:
Shotguns have always been quite underpowered compared to other weapon groups for a number of reasons in the hands of a good player. One hit kill weapons as a result have limited range due all that power. Call of duty has decided to limit this power that shotguns should have big spread with a high damage drop off along with limited overall range. Takes no effort at close range often the result of luck over skill to get a kill due to how big the spread is.
In my eyes shotguns should have a smaller spread with an ADS bonus, high damage within the limited range of shotguns. Still keep the limited range say around 15 metres at maximum.
Map design:
General idea of map design is 3 lanes of traffic with a series of lines of sight crossing over the lanes. One size fits all policy when it comes to making the maps work within every gamemode.
Chokepoints are when lanes which overlap each others during certain points of the map, Lines of sight covers most of the maps result you can’t cover every location.
Certain lines of sights are far more powerful compared to others allowing you to cover most of a certain area. Map design needs to revisit the lane system along with lines of sight issue which covers most of the maps and makes moving one of the worse things to do.
Health regeneration:
Lenght of health regeneration is a serious problem when you look at the overall kill times compared to health regeneration times. In call of duty seconds are a long time when you most guns can kill within 1/2 a second or less at pretty much even the longest range.
Kill times:
Quick kill times make delays appear worse, not talking about minor changes say 25ms but more 250ms being the new normal or higher. Side effect it starts to make other playstyles more viable along with make the game harder.
Art style and design:
Truely believe some degree of artist license can be afforded so that style does not negatively impact the game.
Killstreaks:
Some people have pitch forks at the ready some others are scratching heads shocked I would even suggest this. Rich get richer and poor get poorer, like unlocks not that far off being crazy.
Conclusion:
Understand that the above items are core to the call of duty series but in my eyes also holding the game back. Call of duty advanced warfare proves even with movement system the game still is the same old at it core. Time to look at the cows and start to change them, couple of ways the series could do this if they wanted without ruining the core series. Rather obvious when you think about it how the series could do some experiments without killing it golden goose.
Call of duty cycle carries on this year with people complaining about the game being the same old but yet when you start to talk about changes people bring out pitchforks. Explains why the series is still king given how it gives everybody kingship at some point.
