Oh gawd.
Alright this is an area where I can definately help, and so far I'm not liking what i'm seeing...
Firstly, dont get a bowflex, it's trash and doesn't give you great workouts, as well as being restricted. And it's super over priced.
Instead, all you need is a power rack, flat bench, barbell, dumbells and weights. This will give you a HUGE range of exercises to do, go do some reading for many of these.
Look up bodysolid, they make quality power racks. It's not too expensive, and try and save cash by getting 2nd hand weights.
And don't buy it from your local sports shop that sell the bowflex's and crap, get a proper power rack and bench.
Secondly, the dude you saw in the Bowflex ads, didn't get ripped/swole from using a bowflex.
Thirdly, you are NOT gonna get 'buff' or 'ripped' overnight. You don't pick up a dumbell, then suddenly go, holy shit I gained too much muscle!!... it takes months for progress, years for great results. And you need to be getting a calory surplus with plenty of carbs and proteins.
My advice: Do a few weeks research before you make such a large investment, and get equipment that will last you. All you need now is freeweights (what i said before) and you can train your whole body. And if you somehow convince yourself that you are becoming 'too buff' then you can cut down on the calories, or the intensity to stop gaining, but keep your progress. But that won't happen, the only way ur gonna wanna keep ur weight down is for wrestling, but even then, if u keep growing then your naturally gonna increase in weight anyway, so you may want/need to step up a weight bracket.
lemme know if u got questions. hope this helped.... took me a fair time to write,
