I know you're gonna say it's worth it, but I kinda fill the same way Outie does. I've never really taken the time to think about building a PC. I really would love to have a PC to play games on, but it's just so expensive. lol Got a lot of stuff to pay for at the moment, and can't really afford one. However, I did just buy a new laptop for myself, and I love it very much. It's super fast, can run some small games, and is dependable.
When I boot it up for the first time, I was like "Well, I guess I'll look over here while I'm waiting on it........Oh, time to log in already? WOW!" lol
oooo! I love the new computer feel!
As for price, I understand it can feel like a big bit of money, i felt it myself when i got my PC. If you put it into this perspective the investment may seem better (maybe not in your case as you just bought a new laptop). A PC can be used as a normal desktop or for gaming from. In this sense, it's a 'game console' and 'laptop' put into one machine. When you add the prices of these together, the price of the PC seems more understandable.
As for the hardware side I understand it can be daunting if you have little to no knowledge about computers. As much as people dislike, you can always get a pre-built machines. You could also ask a friend to build it or possibly learn yourself! (tons of resources available online). Websites like reddit and youtube provide a lot of help. Members on NGU will be willing to help if you ask.
I just want to make it clear, I'm not trying to talk you into getting a PC, just having a discussion
