It's because you need to install the modded eboot to be able to load the game
Just install this one: You must login or register to view this content. and if someone provides this eboot then it will work

And I've tried Buc's by copying over everything he provided from the 1.21 update. Game loads. Just won't load multiplayer.

Ah I give up. I've tried with the 1.21 update, and the 1.23 update. I've transferred over the EBOOT, default_mp.self, and the default.self from Buc's download, and it still black screens. Dunno wtf is wrong.
