Today, Sony has released a their patch 3.21 which has unfortunately removed the "Other OS" function due to security issues, which you probably know as GeoHotz hypervisor hack. GeoHotz responded by saying not to update your firmware, and someone on another forum posted a method so that an update is not needed. And this is the process:

  • Go onto the XMB on the start up screen.
  • Go to Network Settings and select Internet Connection Settings.
  • Click Custom > [any option] > [any option] > Manual.
  • For you IP address, you may want to go to your router webpage to find out this remaining info, but for the primary DNS you need to put 67.202.81.137 which should trick the PS3 into thinking you're fully updated.
  • Choose your settings from here on.

Now you should be able to sign in and play games.

This is how the hack was done:

I configured BIND to point *.ps3.update.playstation.net to the same IP, and configured my lighttpd to serve a custom updatelist.txt file for all regions that tells the PS3 it's up-to-date.

And there you have it. There is a minor downfall though. Some discs may become unreadable without this firmware but I can only see that happening with future games and my guess is that GeoHotz will find something revolutionary before that point anyway.

Yeah, I tried it out last night and it didn't affect it at all.

But one thing folks get an older Linksys Wrt54g and set it up with dd-WRT and for that mater any router that has UPnP set up properly a DMZ is a waste.

Wait, this is not what I was told. I do have that router and the only reason I got it was to set it up with Tomato CFW. It's amazing, I do have UPnP but I was told that combined with DMZ for my PS3, it would give me the best connection for it without affecting the other PCs in the house. (PS3 wireless connection btw.)

I have a program I use to bypass the updates ( it should work with any update) you can find the tool here:
You must login or register to view this content..

how to use the tool:

1 run the program
2 untick the firmware box
3 click start proxy
4 enter the IP and port displayed in lg5tool into the ps3's proxy settings
5 sign in to the psn
6 enjoy online gaming

if you have any problems pm me and i will reply Smile^

NO!!!! DON'T DO IT!!!!

even if you don't use the other OS feature it the principal of the thing.

Would you let sony come into your home and take your PS3?

Two things, some people seem to think CFW will enable some sort of piracy. It won't. It'll just be a custom version of 3.21 that doesn't lose OtherOS support. Hacking isn't about getting what you didn't pay for, it's about making sure you do get what you did.

And this is about more than this feature right now. It's about whether these companies have the right to take away advertised features from a product you purchased. Imagine if an exploit were found in Safari on the iPhone, but instead of fixing it, Apple decides to pull web browsing altogether. Legally, they may be within their right to do so, but we have to show them it's the wrong move for the future of the product and the company.

Even if you don't use the feature there are hundreds of thousands of users out there who do; downloading this new FW shows sony that they can do whatever they want to whomever they want when ever they want. I ask you what's next sony? Are you gonna take away my support for two controllers? It's a security threat! another person can play a game with me and even though I paid the $59.99 they didn't. IT MUST BE PIRACY!!!
