God of War III Review

All in all, let me begin by saying God of War III deserves every bit of praise in which it has been given before, and after its release. Though I could go on and on about the quality of this game, I’ll leave that to the review below. Enjoy!

Graphics - 9/10

The graphics in this title are some of the best. Details are key in modern day graphics, and that is not something this game lacks by any means. The detail in wounds, in character expressions, and the environments in which Kratos encounters all show amazing details, as if taken by a photographer him or herself.

Many of you are likely wondering why I took off one point then, yes? I did so primarily for two reasons:

I did not like the fact that the cut scene graphics exceeded that of the in game graphics. Whereas both were certainly great, I do prefer games to share the same graphics between scenes and gameplay, as it shows developer confidence in their work.
After you kill an enemy of little importance, they disappear, which likely is done to explain the orbs in which you receive from their remains. I think that in a game like this, however, that extra time should have been taken to make it so bodies remained, as I think it would have added to the overall feeling of the game. Picture it: Kratos, standing with his sword, surrounded by dozens of dead bodies that belong to his enemies.

All in all, the graphics are not something to complain upon.

Sound - 10/10

To be perfectly honest, sound is not something I normally look at in games. When a game’s sound is either terrible or exceptional, however, I do take notice. The character voices, environment sounds, and combat music all fit the scenes perfectly, and never was their a time in which the character’s mouth did not meet with that of the speaking, something that greatly, for me at least, offsets the games sound and feel. There really is nothing more to say in terms of this game’s sound, other than that it shows the developers behind God of War III didn’t rush when they were correlating sound to gameplay and environment.

Gameplay - 9.5/10

As you can tell by my “.5” added on to the 9/10, I really wanted to give gameplay a 10/10. I think that would be doing the game some unnecessary praise, however, as I feel that there was some repetition in combat. In terms of boss fights, and the harder, and less common enemies, combat was always enjoyable. There was no repetition between boss fights to the slightest extent, and each really did feel like you were fighting a god. Never did I walk away from one of those fights without a feeling of satisfaction.

That said, however, I did feel there was repetition between combat with less important enemies. I understand that there is little that developers can do for things like this, as making each wave of smaller enemies unique in their own way would require technology beyond that of our own. I think that some measures, though, could have been taken to make some of those smaller fights a bit more interesting. For example, an enemy could take a torch, and start a fire in which brings a secondary challenge to the fight, separating it from the regular fights.

If you’re looking for a game with unique, and enjoyable gameplay that will keep you going until the end, God of War III is not a game to pass up.

Story - 10/10

Without a doubt, God of War III sports one of the best stories I’ve ever experienced. The game implements Greek Mythology and well known Greek Gods into the story perfectly, and in a way that seems realistic, rather than something that you know Kratos could never truly pull off.

In many games, there are instances in which you can tell the developers attempted to skip something, in hope to bring the game to a sooner end, or to simply avoid having to put in the extra work to make that part of the story work. I never noticed that in God of War III, as it seemed that there was quite a bit of work and effort put into every detail of the story. I’d go on, but I’d rather not spoil the story for those who have yet to play the game.

Overall - 9.6/10

If you enjoy a game with great audio, enjoyable gameplay, amazing graphics, and a well structured story, God of War III is a game you’ll need to pick up. If you’re someone that likes to look for all the details, and achieve platinum for this title, I’d recommend purchasing this game, as it may take some time. However, if you simply want to run through it once, and are planning on throwing it aside afterwards, this is likely a game you’ll want to rent.

Pros -

Great Graphics
Enjoyable Gameplay
Quality Audio
Catching Storyline

Cons -

Minor Repetition

Hey bro, I have never played the series, but this game looks pretty good, do you think it would be a good buy?

The ending, without spoiling, was a bit too sudden for my taste. However, I do like it for the fact that it went against the traditional endings, something that gets a bit tiring over time.

I did find that the final boss was easier than I would have expected. I was thinking I would have died countless times before I would have succeeded, but I found it to be quite simplistic, with a few challenging areas here and there.

Traditional endings are getting a bit.. cliche???
like Call of duty 4 and Modern warfare 2??
in both of them they end with you on the ground and nearly dead and killing your worst enemy while every body dies
im curious to see how GoW3 ends
ill need to pick up this game
