Before we start, let’s set things straight – this isn’t a critic’s film. Iron Man 2 doesn’t have the storyline or the drama of The Hurt Locker, nor the cinematography and artistic direction of Avatar, and will probably receive a solid 2 or 3 starts from just about every remotely serious film critic. Iron Man 2 is film for the lads. With ridiculous amounts of explosions, guns attached to just about everything, and gadgets galore, you can’t help but get sucked in to Iron Man’s rather shallow but insanely cool aura.

As expected, the storyline is a bit of a mess. Not only does Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) have a Russian psycho with a vengeful grudge (Mickey Rourke) trying to kill him, the US government demanding he hands over his Iron Man suits, he’s being killed by the blue-shiny-thing in his chest that’s keeping him alive. Downey Jr’s performance is typical of the first film – witty, suave, and oozing narcissism. But it’s his portrayal of Iron Man that separates the films from the likes of Spider Man and Superman – he’s unconventional, unstable, and a complete playboy alcoholic, making Peter Parker look rather pathetic. Add in the rather feisty Natalie Rushman played by Scarlett Johansson, and you’ve got everything a guy could want.

The special effects are spectacular, both on a large and small scale – whether it’s Stark pulling projections of diagrams around with his hands on his super computer at home, or a whip made of lighting slicing through racing cars and sending them twisting through the air, the entire film is candy for the eyes, a true visual delight. Sure, it has its faults, and critics will rip it apart, but Iron Man 2 is just too shiny to not satisfy fans. Boasting a budget of $200 million, it has too much money behind it to ever get dull, and with AC/DC shredding the soundtrack throughout, you can’t help but thinking ‘badass’ every time the music kicks in. With Downey Jr wise-cracking his way through the plot, dancing cheer leaders and barrages of endless special effects, Iron Man 2 is just plain good fun.

My Rating: ****
