When the mass exodus of talent leaving Infinity Ward occurred earlier this year it begat rumblings that the decimated development studio may be pulled off the Call of Duty franchise. While the whispers were at that time treated as overreactions, it seems that now things are looking bleak, as Activision is considering "refocusing" the studio on other projects.

When asked if Infinity Ward would continue to be a Call of Duty studio, Activision EVP of of studios David Stohl said, "We're not saying right now. There is definitely a strong shooter philosophy there, for sure. And I think that there's a short- and long-term view on the whole thing. But I think we're rebuilding a studio that can go off and build great new franchises in the future."

Sounds like a very vague way of saying that Treyarch will continue its role as a Call of Duty studio while Infinity Ward may be quietly put on other projects. If that's indeed the case, then oh how the mighty have fallen.

"If you strike us down, we shall arise and destroy you all".

Even though Infinity Ward's last game, Modern Warfare 2, was one of the most successful titles ever, the studio was absolutely gutted as dozens of senior staffers left to join ousted former bosses Jason West and Vince Zampella at the newly-formed Respawn Studios. Industry watchers have been wondering if Infinity Ward can even survive this whole ordeal, or if the studio would simply be folded in with Treyarch or Bungie and quietly killed off. Seems that IW will live on, but now Activision will be doing their best to distance the studio from its former flagship franchise, instead pushing them to work on a different IP.

At this point we're left to wonder what might have been had Activision not canned West and Zampella in what quickly turned into a rather public and particularly ugly firing. Had the whole thing been handled with a bit more tact then maybe Infinity Ward would have remained mostly undisturbed and right now we'd be getting our first taste of what was in store for Modern Warfare 3. Alas, hindsight is 20/20 and now both sides are left figuring out what to do given the way things are, not the way things might have been. It's just sad to see an entire studio continue to get caught up in the middle of a disagreement that spiraled out of control and now threatens to humble what was once one of gaming's most-revered development houses.

Well it will be a fall of a great devolper. But if they have lost most of their talent, would we really still want them making our games?

Do a barrel roll!
And I'm sure you don't watch any E3 to notice that Treyarch and activision have made a 2 year agreement with the black ops demo.

I expect to see something amazing from Respawn. After all the head people from IW left to join respawn I'm pretty sure they should be able to make a pretty decent game. After seeing what they can do with cod4 and well I guess you could say what they couldn't do with mw2, any game they make should be at very least decent. Mw2 was designed pretty well but there was quite a few flaws with the game mechanics. Such as no recoil guns, over powered...Everything, and giving people that are bad at the game an advantage with death streaks. Oh and not to mention over powered killstreaks.

But I think black ops should be better then mw2. I actually played cod 5 a few days ago and it was a pretty good game. There wasn't as much action and most of the people were terrible but it was a lot more balanced. And Treyarch has learned from IW mistakes so aslong as they don't make it to exagerated(as in killstreaks, weapons, all that jazz) and noob friendly it should be a pretty good game. I'm definately going to buy it.

Well... i guess this is a good thing because looking at MW2 i can tell that their future projects would be awful. To be honest i loved IW's campaign on CoD4 and MW2, but now since they are done with Call of Duty i guess we can just hope for the best from Treyarch.
